From what I understand, you have to choose either to import or not import, and they won't let you in as a PR driving a US car if you're not importing it. That's just what I've read here on the forum. My wife and I choose not to bring our US car in just because the export from US/import to US process was more that the car was worth, so we bought a newer used car in Quebec. The taxes were a bit higher, but we didn't have to do the importation and there weren't any modifications required to the car.
Keesio - I agree with IvanP.... I don't think you'll have much luck getting it back and forth across the border without importing it. But I imported my truck a few months ago as a "Returning Canadian" and my husband will be landing next week and importing our car. It was relatively inexpensive... about $200 for RIV fees and then about another $120 for a Provincial inspection fee (the Federal inspection fees are covered in the RIV fees). The Provincial fees will vary depending on what province you are bringing it into. Despite some of the reports we read here, we found the process was super easy. And, our equivalent vehicles to purchase here in Canada would have cost WAY more. We drive older vehicles, but it would still cost a lot more for same cars in Canada, so it's a two time affair for us. We are rural, so vehicles are important, but if you're not sure if you will need a vehicle, you could put on your "To Follow" list and try going without a car and see how it goes. If you find you are ok without it, I don't think you are under any obligation to bring it later - I think it just makes it possible to bring it later.

Crazy news... my wife went back to the US tonight to visit family and take care of other issues and when she arrives at her place, guess what she sees in her pile of mail that her dad has been collecting for her...

COPR!

Apparently received today. eCAS update last night and COPR arriving today. A long journey is almost at an end (next up is to officially land)!

Hi Ivan,
I'd like to jump in on this topic. When my wife is ready to officially land in Canada, we plan on driving up from the US in her car with her stuff. Now the thing is that we aren't sure if we want to have a car in Canada (we will live downtown Toronto so a car is not a necessity but more of a headache and may not be worth the expense). We'd like to try it out for a bit. Because we are unsure, does she still need to officially import it? Or can we tell officials that we may plan on bringing it back to the US and leaving it there (give it to a relative ,etc) and not deal with trying to import it then but maybe import it at a later time?

Thanks
We are in downtown Toronto as well. We have been going back and forth with the idea of importing my US car once I settle, but now we are back to thinking of selling it. Just a parking space alone is so costly regardless of renting or buying.

Our address was changed in ECAS to our Montreal address - it took 3 days from when we emailed the address change until the change showed up in ECAS. The status still says "application received," of course, but at least some day in the distant future when they finally mail us COPR, it will be to the right address.

At least you know they may have actually touched your file too in order to update it and they are actually capable of updating ECAS I suppose. I was starting to wonder.

A parking spot in my building is $200 a month. I can swallow that if we will use the car all the time but we won't. I'm leaning towards "no" but I'd like to experiment for a month. Looks like that won't be possible.

What area of downtown are you in? I live in near the TIFF building. When all of this settles down (hopefully you get your stuff soon too), we should get together for a drink and look back on this crazy experience!

You would think they could save time by finishing up the applications that are sitting on their desks for months. Someone has to read all the requests for status updates that we send, and we bug our MPs, who also call looking for status updates. Over the course of several months, that must really add up.

Incidentally, I'll be occupied with our move for the next week or so and won't be able to update the spreadsheet (not sure when I'll have my Internet service installed in Montreal), so please contact amikety if you have an update.

If anyone else would like to help update the spreadsheets, please let me know and I'll add you as a spreadsheet editor. It's not hard, and you stay anonymous - the only person you need to give your email to is me (so I can add you as editor).

Does anyone know if you have to sign for your COPR when it comes in the mail?

Pretty sure you don't, unless you sent in a courier envelope with your application.
