What if someone doesn't even step out of the airport/ or make a U turn (land) and return back to US same day?
Airport is inside Canada. So the rule is not about how long you entered Canada or if you dont step out of airport. Its about entered Canada.
Still i have seen few posts on people going back next day itself and cbp is not demanding on it. So check more with cbp and plan.

I get it what your are saying. But, the situation I mentioned is similar to layover.

The whole soft landing thing and returning same day is a grey area given people have tried it at a land border for example and been told quarantine is mandatory although after some persuasion with CBSA some have managed to turnaround back to the US.

An airport though is different given once you pass through immigration/customs you are in effect entering Canada, even more so should you leave airside into the terminal arrivals hall and then to departures. Other countries with quarantine stress that transits are exempt as long as they stay in the 'sterile' airside area but Canada has not been that specific in guidance , just saying dont leave the airport .

So maybe suggest you make contact with CBSA for guidance given just because someone on a public forum says no problem doesnt make it true for everyone and if facing immigration you will be asked by CBSA for an isolation plan.

Thanks @Bs65. Looks like the quarantine act is going to expire on June 21, 2020.

Source: https://orders-in-council.canada.ca/attachment.php?attach=39285&lang=en . Please correct me if I am missing anything here.

Thanks.

P.S: I understand the quarantine act period might get extended as well.

Hello - I sent my query to CBSA and PHAC (Public Health Agency of Canada) and I received below response form PHAC.

With regards to your particular situation, people entering Canada not exhibiting symptoms may be permitted by the instructions of a quarantine officer or screening officer to stay at a hotel for an overnight layover before making their connecting the next day. They must wear an appropriate non-medical mask or face covering while in public settings, and go directly to their hotel without any unnecessary stops along the way.

While staying at a hotel, travellers should stay in their room to avoid contact with others, practise physical distancing (maintain a 2-metre distance) and practise good hand hygiene and cough etiquette at all times. To get a meal, use room service as long as your meal is delivered and left outside the door of your hotel room.

It is not recommended to stay with friends or family where it could be harder to avoid contact with people compared to a hotel room.

Failure to comply with this Order is an offence under the Quarantine Act. Individuals who contravene the mandatory isolation or the mandatory quarantine requirements may be subject to a range of enforcement measures including verbal and written warnings, arrest, detention or escort to a designated quarantine site.

CBSA response: Quarantine and self - isolation falls under the responsibility of PHAC.

Did you mention that you want to return to the US the next day? Assume CBSA thinks you are travelling to somewhereelse in Canada.

Friends,

My copr expired June 4th. I sent a request before it expired. Ircc replied not to worry and let them know when ready to travel. Now online I see my status changed from approved to pending which I thing is good. I am planning to go in August. Should I start the process now so that I get it in time for august. Also I see lot of questions regarding extension but no real experience from people who got extension. It will be great to share links of people’s experience.

Hi ...
So here’s my situation... we have booked flights for June 11 but with all this re-entry ban looking to cancel the plan.CoPR expires on June27. I have few questions though.
1) Will we be asked to retake IELTS again ? Since it has two yrs of validity from date of exam.
2) Should we wait for information from IRCC on when can we travel again after the CoPR expiry ?
3) Has anyone landed and returned the same day to USA ? (By air)
4) Has anyone who requested for extension and informed through webform that they will not be able to travel due to travel ban got any further instructions from IRCC on the extension and medical s?

They only said that once you are ready to travel, inform them and they'll let you know what they need. IELTS is unlikely given what I know. Medicals might be possible if you don't have enough validity by the time you're ready to travel.
Thank you let’s see how it all unfolds.

They only start processing extensions once COPRs expire. That is why you’ve seen a change in status. People seem to get an extension notice in a few weeks. You should likely be fine to travel in August.
