Hi,

Does anyone know what happens to my contribution to US social security now that I am a Canadian citizen?

I worked in the US on H1-B visa for several years. During that time I was a citizen of India. Since India and US don't have a treaty for Social Security benefits, my contribution to the US social security would not benefit me at any point in my life. But now I am a Canadian citizen. And Canada and US have an International Agreement on social security.

So my questions is - how do I make sure that my contribution to US social security while on H1-B visa impacts my retirement in a beneficial way now that I am a Canadian citizen.

Thanks.

The first thing that you need to do is to contact the social security administration and request an update of your ssn. You can do this by creating an account and entering your information here:

http://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/

The amount of benefits you paid for will not change, so verify how much benefits you have and verify that you are above the minimum threshold to receive benefits.

Hope this helps, good luck!
