Good evening everyone!

I'm planning to go to the US this coming July for a holiday. I'm a PR. I asked my friend if I still need my passport to come back to Canada and he said "No, just the PR card." And he said that he did not go through an immigration officer, he said that he used a kiosk or something like that. Is that true? Thank you very much!

But how about coming back to Canada? My friend told me he went to a kiosk or something and scanned his PR card and that's it, he's back in Canada. Is that true?

Depends on the Port of Entry. Major airports have Kiosks, but I doubt land ports do. The kiosks do accept PR cards. Either way, you would still have the passport you used to enter the US with you (I would think).

Hi - My condition is very similar.

My 6yr old daughter's Indian passport expired in May 2016 and we need to travel to US to return the I-94. While I dont see huge issues in crossing the border (we are happy to be turned back to Canada - which is what I want). My question more so is - when i enter Canada (all our PR cards are valid), will the officer question about the expired Indian passport or he/she will let us through since our PR cards are valid. I plan to renew the Indian passport asap though.

Pls advise

are you driving? i'm pretty sure children only need a birth certificate to enter canada by car, not a passport. You can call the CBSA office you'll cross through to confirm this. However, from what i've been told at the land border, only the PR card is needed to get back into Canada. if you're flying, i'd imagine you'd run into issues boarding the plane with an expired passport.

I usually offer both. The last time I crossed, I asked about it and the officer confirmed he only needs the PR card. As the other poster suggested, it's assumed you'll have a passport anyway because it would have been needed to get into the US.
