Citizenship application

Hi All,

I submitted an application for Canadian citizenship on behalf of my wife and daughter and it was received on the 12th of August, 2019. With the UCI and application number given.Today i received bundle back saying that application is incomplete. Reason mentioned was:
"The passport(s) or travel document(s) provided do not cover entire 5 year period preceding the date of application for my wife."
My wife's passport expired in 2018 (Nigerian passport) and we didn't renew because she has never left Canada since she came n as a student in 2012.
So, my question is : do we need to go renew the Nigerian passport so as to cover 2019 or we can just write a letter of explanation for this;

There is an explanation box right below the question asking for your passport number and validity. Just specify there that you never renewed the passport because you don't plan to leave Canada.
No need to renew it for the mere purpose of the citizenship application.
