Hi all,

My Passport is expiring in January 2026, I have also completed my citizenship application.

1) Should I renew my passport first or submit my application for citizenship? I was thinking I might get my Canadian citizenship and passport before that. Am I taking too much risk?

2) Is it possible to do both simultaneously? or do I have to provide my renewed passport copy with my citizenship application?

3) Also, I have a trip planned in November 2025 to my home country (India) for 6 weeks, will traveling with a passport with 2 months expiry be a problem?

Any ideas?

Thank you

1. Doesn't really matter.
2. Yes. If you submit the citizenship app before you receive your new passport, you won't have to update that info to IRCC. If IRCC subsequently asks for more information/pages of all passports, then you would have to provide copies incl of the new passport. This isn't controversial or weird though - lots of people renew passports. (It's a fairly small number of applicants - maybe 5%?, maybe less - that get asked to provide photocopies of all passport pages).
3. While technically not - India will let you in (I believe) and Canada does not care about your passport expiry as long as PR card is valid, would still STRONGLY recommend not risking it. (Sometimes airlines do not know this stuff, and sometimes 'things happen', like what if you need to travel through some other country). Eg: it is ALWAYS a good idea to have a valid passport with > 6 months validity if you think you might need to travel, incl unexpected travel.

Obviously a lot of people risk it, esp citizens in countries where they can get urgent passports - so up to you.
