Child Benefits Questions

Hey Guys,

I applied for child benefit while registering for my son online. I received a letter from CRA asking me to provide the missing information. In the letter, on the last income section, it says "In the last TWO years, if you and your spouse became a resident of Canada......complete the following information for a period before entering Canada".

I am trying to submit the form online; however the online form looks different than the one I was mailed and there is
is nothing on the online form that says in the last TWO years in the income information. Now I am confused if the income information is only required if I became resident in the last TWO years.

Me and my spouse became resident in 2018 and it is already more than 2 years. Do we still need to report income for the year of 2017 and 2016?

Please advise.

You only need to provide proof of income for the past 2 years. CRA needs to know your family income for the past 2 years in order to calculate your level of child benefit.

Hi All,
I am currently receiveing CCB for my kids (1PR + 1 Canadian born) from CRA and me and My wife has recently recieved PR.
Query: My wife is planning for a vacation to India and she will be out from Canada for more than 6 months with kids as well. Will I be still eligible to receive the CCB? I will come back in a month. Please advise as I do not wish to commit any legal issues unknowingly.

Thank you for the response. That makes sense. In that case I don't think I need to fill out anything on income statement section as the form says not to include any income reported on Canadian income tax?? CRA should have the info already
Thank you.

No you wouldn’t qualify because the children are not in Canada with you. Your wife needs to report her absence to CRA. They will determine if your wife is still eligible to receive CCB while abroad. In general, she wouldn’t qualify to receive CCB if she is gone for over 6 months but you never know.

So it means she is eligible for first 6 months and if in case she is not returning within that period she needs to report to CRA

No she likely won’t qualify for any of the time outside Canada but it is up to CRA to decide.. She may not qualify for any of the time outside Canada. CCB is to help parents with the high cost of raising children in Canada. One of the requirements is that children be in Canada. When talking about being away for significant time that is more than a vacation. You are required to advise that they are going to be out of the country.

You must advise CRA when the children and the parent receiving CCB leaves Canada for more than a normal vacation length. If they don’t return to Canada you will not qualify for CCB. CCB is to help with the costs of raising children in Canada. Failure to report all of this to CRA is consider fraud So it is very important that you notify CRA. Also much better to not receive money versus receiving a letter telling you that you must pay back all the CCB money that you received incorrectly right away

As long as your child remains living with you in Canada yes you should apply for CCB. Would suggest googling

Hello there! We have a little bit of a complicated case about my wife's CCB. Here are the timelines:

1. She received CCB for the period Jul 2021 to Mar 2022 but now CRA is claiming overpayment due to a change of marital status.
2. We got married on July 2021. This is both our second marriage. She was divorced from 2019
3. I arrived here in Canada on May 2021 as a visitor.
4. I have no income from Jun-Dec 2021 as I just got my PR last Apr 2022
5. CRA asked for my "world income" of 2020 - this is the main confusion. Why should they include my income of 2020 when I was not yet a resident nor married to my wife then.
6. I came from Saudi Arabia which has no income tax
7. CRA is now showing more than 2k owing them :(
8. We want to get clear understanding about this overpayment and most importantly the MAIN REASON why should my income from Saudi Arabia need to be added as FAMILY INCOME when we were not yet cohabiting/married.

Thank you very much for those we can better explain to us the logic of CRA. God bless!

They need to calculate if you are eligible or not eligible for CCB

What we don't understand is that why my income outside of Canada even before I came here and got married matters? Her income as single parent should be the only one that is required. Thank you.
