Question: I just got my PR card today. I was on work permit before, and now I have to have my health card & sin card change/amend to the one without expiration date. Also, I haven't filed my taxes yet. I don't know which one to do first. I know that the numbers on the sin card would change if I had it amended and I don't know if it will affect my tax filing or not.

I'm a little confused. Once you get your new sin card, just let your employer and bank know and your history is linked to the new one. That's all you have to do. Then file your taxes with your new sin number.

Practically you should file your taxes with your current SIN number, once you file your taxes apply for the new one and ask Service Canada to attach your history to the old SIN number. I am not sure will this happen, but if i were you i would have tried this way, also you can write to service canada about you situation and they should be able to guide you.

I am sure some or the other would have been in similar situation and they can answer what needs to be done, wait for experts advise.

Just inform your employer and the bank if you have investments (of any kind including saving accounts). When you file your taxes, use your NEW SIN. If you call the CRA, they will tell you that they already know your new SIN. You don't even have to tell them that you got a new one.

This information is incorrect. If he has the new sin card he should file his taxes with the new sin. If he doesn't then the old one. It's really that simple. He just needs to inform his bank and employer the rest is all done behind the scenes.

that's my question though. i just receive my PR card. should I:
1. apply for a new sin card, then file my tax with the new sin

or

2. file my tax first with the current one I have (the one starting with 9, with an expiry date), then apply for a new sin card afterwards.

Whichever you're comfortable with. I would go with 1 since it takes an hour or less to get the new SIN.

Ask for your new SIN and after that file your taxis. FOY you could have asked for your SIN and health cards right after landing.

i did try to with my copr but service canada said that i need to wait for the PR card. apparently PR applications submitted from within canada, you need the PR card before you can renew the sin and health card. its in service canada website too:
Permanent residents

You must provide one of the following primary documents:
Permanent Resident Card issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. This is the only acceptable document if your claim was processed in Canada.

I'm sure many would disagree. I'm still waiting for my PPR so I can't say anything.

There were guys on this forum who stopped at service Canada on their way back from landing and got their new SIN. Maybe it depends on the person you are dealing with.

Hi All,

I haven't received my PR Card yet, however with COPR I got a new SIN Card and health card.

I had filed the taxes using my old SIN #.

Once you have your COPR (completed landing & signed by Border Security Officer), you have to go to Service Canada along with your COPR and old SIN Card. They will issue you a new Permanent SIN #, and you would get the card in 10 days.

Service Canada sends the information to CRA and your SIN Numbers would be merged. Its done in the back-end, you are not involved in this back-end process, process might take about 2-3 months.

If CRA records are updated with NEW SIN #, then you need to file your taxes using NEW SIN #. If CRA records are not updated yet, you need to use your OLD SIN#.

If your NEW SIN# is updated in CRA Records and if you are trying file your taxes using OLD SIN# by E-File or NETFILE, or vice-versa, it will not recognize the SIN # and it would throw an error message.

To check the status call CRA to verify if they have their new SIN # or not. OR Try logging into your CRA Account (if you have one), after login it would say, you have applied for New SIN #, please register again using new SIN # and it will not allow you to continue to browse through your account information.

Hope this helps...
