Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding my Canada PR process.

I’ve received my PR visa / COPR, and the expiry date is in June. Due to some personal circumstances, I may not be able to travel to Canada before this expiry date.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Is it possible to request an extension from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for the PR visa validity or landing date?

If yes:

  • What is the process to request it?
  • Do they generally approve such requests?
  • What kind of reasons are considered valid?

Any guidance or personal experiences would really help.

Didn’t your sponsor aka your wife have a baby and you were desperately trying to get there to support her just a little while back ?

What pray tell could be so important to override this ?

Extensions aren't granted. If you fail to land by the expiry date, you'll have to start the entire application process again from scratch.

Well you’ll have to make time or you’ll be starting the process from scratch

You can always do a soft landing and go back for a short time. Also, you don't have a PR yet, you just have a CoPR - you only get a PR once you land.

I'm reaching out to this community in the hope of getting some guidance, advice, and insights from anyone who may have experienced a similar situation. I'm honestly devastated by what has happened and would really appreciate any help.

My Canadian PR application was reportedly approved on June 27, 2025. However, I never received any email or other communication from IRCC informing me of the approval, issuing my Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR), or requesting any further action from my side to complete the process.

I discovered that my application had been approved only after reviewing my GCMS notes. Until then, I had no knowledge that the application had reached the approval stage.

What makes this situation even more distressing is that I have continued to raise IRCC webforms regularly to enquire about the status of my application. As recently as yesterday, I was still following up with IRCC, genuinely believing that my application was under process.

Then, on October 20, 2026, I received an email from IRCC stating that my COPR had expired and that they could not extend it any further.

I'm completely shocked by this response because, to the best of my knowledge, I never received the COPR or any notification advising me that my application had been approved, that a landing deadline applied, or that I needed to take action before a particular date.

To make matters more confusing, even today, my online application portal continues to show the status as “Under Processing.” This appears inconsistent with the email I received stating that my COPR has expired.

I'm devastated by the situation, especially after waiting so long for this outcome and making plans around the possibility of moving to Canada with my family.

I'm now planning to compile all the supporting evidence I can, including:

  • Screenshots and records of my email inbox showing that I cannot locate any approval notification, COPR, or landing instructions from IRCC.
  • My GCMS notes indicating that the application was approved.
  • Copies of the webforms I submitted over the past year seeking updates on my application.
  • Screenshots of my online portal, which continues to show “Under Processing.”
  • The recent email from IRCC stating that my COPR has expired and cannot be extended.
My intention is to submit a detailed webform explaining the circumstances and requesting that IRCC review my case, investigate why I did not receive the relevant communications, and consider whether any remedial action is possible.

I would be extremely grateful for your advice on the following questions:

  1. Has anyone experienced a similar situation where their PR application was approved, but they never received their COPR or the associated notification, only to be told later that the COPR had expired?
  2. If I submit documentary evidence demonstrating that I never received the approval notification or COPR, is there any possibility that IRCC may reconsider the decision, reopen the file, or provide another opportunity to complete the landing process?
  3. Has anyone successfully resolved a similar case through an IRCC webform, a formal reconsideration request, or assistance from an immigration lawyer?
  4. Given that my portal still shows “Under Processing,” could this discrepancy be relevant to my request for reconsideration?
  5. Would you recommend any other course of action beyond submitting a webform, particularly if IRCC maintains that the COPR cannot be extended?
I understand that every case is different and that there may be no guarantee of a favourable outcome. However, before accepting that this is the end of the road, I want to make sure I have explored every reasonable option available to me.

If you have experienced something similar, know of a relevant case, or can recommend a practical next step, I would sincerely appreciate hearing from you. Any guidance, personal experiences, or advice on how best to approach IRCC would mean a great deal to me right now.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and for any help you can offer.

If she has the baby in Canada she would have filled out an application for health coverage that specified your child would meet the residency obligation to qualify for “free” healthcare. If your baby and the mom don’t meet the residency obligations they could be asked to pay for the care they received.
