First some background...
My Close WP expires in 2 months, I plan to apply for Open Work Permit . I have received positive eligibility assessment
on my PR application under CEC program.

My family is currently outside Canada. I am not sure whether they would be even coming to Canada
until we get our PR(PR applied for family). I expect to get my PR by Apr,2015.

Even when they come here my spouse wouldn't be working but son would be going to school(3rd grade)

So my query is can I apply for open work permit just for my self now and may be later i.e could be before or after my close work permit expires
apply visa for them?

What kind of visa should I be applying considering that my spouse wont be working and my son would be going to school?

Thanking in anticipation.

apply Visitor visa for your spouse
Note: Anyway you can't apply Spousal Open WP for your wife as she is not in Canada , for SOWP , spouse must be in Canada

Hope this will help

Thanks for the response. So I understand that I will have to apply visitor visa for my spouse and study permit for my son once they plan to come to Canada.
Plus it wouldn't matter if I do apply for them after my close WP expires as by then I should have my open work permit. Correct?

You can apply for SOWP for your spouse. She need not be inside Canada to apply (we successfully applied for my spouse OWP).

However I suggest you wait till you get your BOWP and then apply as the validity of your spouse OWP will be linked to the validity of your current work permit.

Though you mentioned that your spouse will not be working while in Canada it is better to apply for SOWP as that has a higher success rate compared to the visitor visa.

For your son it would be an open study permit.

astasi is right! From July 18 this year conditions for OWP for spouse are changed and now you can apply for your spouse OWP even if she/he is not inside Canada. Although you should have a valid WP (closed or open) for at least 6 months from the time you apply for your spouse one.

I applied in March this year so this rule has been there for a while.

One correction though as mihais2u pointed out that the main applicant's work permit should be at least valid for 6 months. So you have to wait for your BOWP before you apply for SOWP.

I stand corrected ;)
