Re: utterly confused and no help in sighT!!

thanks Leon. That's good to know. I couldnt afford to pay for both my wife and my ticket anyway. Maybe if i sold a kidney - :D

Any tips on how I can make my application stronger? I mean, to overcome the obstacle of a small wedding (with just 2 friends) and the birth certificate issue. Any tips/suggestions from anyone would be great.

From what I understood of your first post, you got married in Canada, right? Well, it's very easy to explain why you didn't have a "big indian wedding" in that case: you're not in your country, you don't have any relatives or close friends living there, and your wife's family was not informed. that should cover it.

as for the birth certificate, can't you get one from the indian consulate/embassy in Canada?

You have other proof of your relationship? Photos of you together, trips your have taken together, joint lease agreements, joint bank account, joint utilities or something?

Re: utterly confused and no help in sighT!!

We have tons of photos, videos in both PEI, Guelph (thats where I am now), from our trip to India, photos with her family, my family, etc etc, I am pretty sure I can find the plane tickets (for the india trip).

Joint lease agreement: yes (We are listed as Renter 1 and Renter 2)

Rogers wireless line: I have two numbers. One is with her and one is with me. Rogers knows its for my wife

Credit Card: I recently added her as a secondary card holder. The card should be here soon

Plus, we are taking a trip to Connecticut, US next week for the elton john concert so we are renting a car and all. Over at the rental company, they asked for the co-renter (secondary driver) and my wife is listed there too.

Joint bank account: people told me not to do it as it will affect my credit history adversely (as hers is quite bad and mine is average/decent). Should I do this anyway?
Will this suffice or do I need anything more?

Also, I can have my medical done here right, before I send the application, they won't need it from India I hope?
Most importantly, I just hope the immigration agencies dont tell our families that we are married? Can they do that?

Sounds like you have a lot of stuff. No, I don't think a joint bank account is absolutely necessary.

Re: utterly confused and no help in sighT!!

Oh yea, we have tons of proof when it comes to photos videos etc. I am also thinking of sending them videos etc. My marriage is genuine and I am willing to travel all the way to India to sit and explain it to them. I am confident that ways.
By the way,
I can have my medical done here right, before I send the application, they won't need it from India I hope?

Re: utterly confused and no help in sighT!!

I have never heard of them interviewing your family but if they find out that your families don't that you are married, like you said, in India, they will understand why.

You can have your medical done in Canada. Just make sure you are doing the medical for outland application and that they have the right forms. I am told the forms for outland vs. inland are a bit different.

Re: utterly confused and no help in sighT!!

yea hopefully they will. But I am just wondering if even if I process it in-canada, CIC can contact our families and tell 'em. Just seems wrong as we have a right to decide when we tell them, right?

Hi, you should not send any electronic stuff like videos etc. It says in the checklist.

http://cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/3904E.PDF

So, maybe you should exclude the video tapes.

Re: utterly confused and no help in sighT!!

thanks mridula. I somehow missed that!

Any ideas whether the CIC can actually inform our families of our marriage even though we dont want to (our families, they wont understand)

I suppose you could expressly prohibit CIC from making any references to your marital status to your families, but of course, you do that at your own risk: the worker may decide to ignore it, he/she may not be aware of it, or the CIC could decide that without verifying the situation with your family, your case is not strong enough and dismiss it.

I doubt that they would contact your family without mentioning the marriage, and I doubt that asking them not to mention it would do any good. So - I am not a specialist, I'm just giving you my opinion - you have three choices here: tell CIC not to contact your family; tell CIC not to mention your marriage; talk to your families now, so that they learn it from you, and not from a faceless state worker from another country...

Re: utterly confused and no help in sighT!!

Hi Inshadesofgrey,

I see no reason why the immigration should contact your family at all. I have not heard of anyone who has been contacted like that. The only time you might need to worry is when they call for the interview. Because its better to take reference letters from family and friends saying that you have been married to so and so and they have attended the wedding.... etc etc (not a must but just to be on the safer side).
Other than that, i dont think you should worry too much about they contacting your family.
I hope your birth certificate problem is now resolved.

Good luck.

Re: utterly confused and no help in sighT!!

thanks guys. I appreciate your advice.

So, in the supporting explanation (essay etc), should I mention that our families don't know?

Re: utterly confused and no help in sighT!!

You don't have to explicitly say that your families don't know but you should explain the situation of your mother dying and deciding to have a small wedding with just a couple of friends as to not interfere with the griefing process of your family. Have your friends who were there write statements that they know of your relationship and were at your wedding. I have never heard of them contacting family anyway.

Indian Citizens resident overseas can apply for a birth certificate at the Indian Embassy or High Commission under whose jurisdication you are in.
