Hi,
I’m looking for guidance regarding a driver’s license and car insurance situation in British Columbia.
I am on a PR. My spouse is currently in Canada on a visitor visa and holds an International Driving Permit (IDP). I plan to buy a car soon, but I currently hold a Learner’s licence.
I will be submitting a spousal sponsorship (dependent) application, and once I receive the AOR, I will apply for an Open Work Permit for my spouse.
My questions are:
1. Can my spouse obtain a full BC driver’s licence while the Open Work Permit is in applied / in-process status?
2. Can my spouse be the primary insurance holder for the vehicle?
If not, can my spouse be added as an additional driver on my insurance?
3. Since I hold a Learner’s licence, can my spouse act as my supervising driver?
4. How long is my spouse allowed to drive in BC using an International Driving Permit? ( Not sure if it is 90 days or 6 months)
Any advice or personal experience would be appreciated.
Thank you!
