Hi ,
I’m looking for guidance regarding a driver’s license and car insurance situation in British Columbia.
I am a Permanent Resident. My spouse is currently in Canada on a visitor visa and holds an International Driving Permit (IDP) with 5 years driving history. I plan to buy a car soon, but I recently received my Learner’s licence.

I will be submitting a spousal sponsorship application and once I receive the AOR, I will apply for an Open Work Permit for my spouse.

My questions are:

1.Since I hold a Learner’s licence, can my spouse act as my supervising driver?
2. Can my spouse obtain a full BC driver’s licence while the Open Work Permit is in applied / in-process status?
3. Can my spouse be the primary insurance holder for the vehicle?
If not, can my spouse be added as an additional driver on my insurance?
4. How long is my spouse allowed to drive in BC using an International Driving Permit (90 days or 6 months)?

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you!!
