Hey all!

We are flying to Canada next month, and I have a question about baggage allowance. Obviously most airlines offer 1-2 bag(s) free, then excess baggage at a cost. We're flying Lufthansa, then Air Canada. We're happy to pay for the extra luggage (it costs less than shipping it!) but we're confused about how much extra luggage we're allowed. A total of 3 bags? 4?

Anybody know?

At least on Lufthansa from Europe we paid 75 euros for first extra baggage and 150 for the next ones. For two people we had 5 bags and a dog, costing all together 450 euros extra. I don't know how it works when you are flying also on Air Canada. At least before when I flew with extra baggage, I only paid the first air carrier for the both flights.

Thanks!

We booked our kitties on the flight, and we were told by Lufthansa and Air Canada we only pay the fee for them once.. so I'm hoping it's the same for baggage.

But, either way - one of you was allowed to take 3 bags, right?

There are a lot of factors which affect your baggage allowance, including frequent flier status, booking class, air lines...... Air Canada JUST changed their policy to charging for 1st bags on the lowest booking class. The only way your question can accurately be answered is by calling the airlines or reading it on their website.

Well, first of our luggages meaning the two bags were 0 euros, the next two 75 euros and last one 150. Since one person can take one for free, second is the lower price and last is 150 euros. At least when I flew Lufthansa had this special second luggage at reduced rate when flying from Europe to NA. Both Lufthansa and Air Canada belong to the Star Alliance, so usually you pay only one fee. There isn't really proper info on their websites, so I'd suggest to call and ask the first carrier if the luggages will be paid for the whole trip.

Two things to keep in mind regarding baggage:

1. If all your flights are on a single ticket, you only need to check your baggage once, and pay baggage fees once.

2. The baggage allowance for the first leg of your journey is what is used. This is an important distinction, as some airlines will have larger baggage allowances for trans-atlantic flights than for flights within Europe.
