Anyone with experience bringing pets?

I have a cat that I am considering bringing with me when I land, but then again I'm not entirely sure.
I am thinking about leaving her here in the states for now, but if my family moves I would like to bring her to Canada. Would I put her on a list of goods to follow sort of thing, or something else...
Has anyone been in this situation?

im not sure but i think i read in a thead somewhere, that the rule in canada is they only need to have proof that the pet is vaccinated,check it in cic's website i think i saw there about bringing domestic animals

I think I found that too, which is good, I wouldn't want her to go through a quarantine. I'm having enough of a time trying to litter train her as she is an adult now. (She adopted us just over a year ago).
I guess I'm just wondering about trying to bring her after I've already landed. I don't know if there are any other things I would have to do to make that happen.

i have a pet too, its a small dog, hes my baby, im thingking if ever how am i gona bring him, the apartment that my partner got for us in richmond is a building and im not sure if they allow pets, i hope they do , yes i read that they dont need to be quarantine, do u have idea about the fare of animals thru plane? im praying to God that il get approve soon, i miss my partner

Sounds to me like the fish will need a passport !!!!!


I think we need a pressure group for fair immigration of fish LOL

Our dog is bounces back and forth between Canada with me and the US with my wife. Neither of us has ever had any issues crossing either border with him. Just be sure to have proof of his rabies shots.

It seems that the US is a special case, but that is good to know.

I looked at Southwest, (I'll fly through them since I get two free bags and I'm bringing all my belongings as luggage) and they charge $75 each way, but only accept small pets (the carrier has to fit under the seat) by reservation.

I decided to use (waste) my free time to look at some other airlines as well, if only to take my mind off waiting for my PPR for a few moments.
All of the airlines seemed to have slightly different policies, so make sure you check the website and/or call before you make your plans. I just searched "pets" right from each of the airlines main page.

I thought I would briefly share my experience since I moved home to Canada with 2 cats from South America. (I am Canadian, so not sure about any PR issues with pets though)

I had my vet in S.A. do a full exam, vaccinations, etc. and he prepared the necessary paperwork for the export from Bolivia.
Then I translated that to English for the U.S. & Canada.
In both countries (I came via Miami) they checked the papers to make sure the rabies vaccine was up to date and that the pet described was the same pet in the cage. In Miami it was free. In Toronto, they charged me $40 approx. for the "inspection" and processing the animals. I picked up the cats in Baggage Claim, then as we passed through the final customs check with the stamped paper, they directed me to a special area for inspections of larger items and pets. That's where I paid and they stamped some forms. It took about 10 minutes and the guy was very friendly. Luckily it was empty that day, there could have been a longer wait.

It was quite simple if you are organized and prepared. Be sure to prepare the cage properly, securing the door, and labelling VERY clearly the airline info, your contact info, etc. to be sure there are no errors in moving the pets.

I'm bringing my dog in from Africa... all they need is a rabies vaccine (and whatever export permit the country you're in requires).

But we have to take her on British Airways (only BA and KLM fly direct and KLM flights for us would have been way more expensive)... so it's costing us around $1500 for her. It's crazy but at least there are no quarantine costs on the other end (which can be way more than that in other places).

Spending all that money makes me want to cry but leaving her behind would feel way worse so....

That's only half of the price I got from an international pet relocation service provider. I am planning to bring my dog to Vancouver from China. Would you use any calming agent?

Hi Steaky

It's so expensive! I won't be using any kind of sedative because we have a 10 hour flight to london, 20 hours in london and then a 10 hour flight to vancouver. There's no way a sedative is going to help beyond the first flight. I'm sure she'll be miserable and stressed but she's yound and healthy so I have no reason to think she won't get over it once we arrive. We are making sure to get her used to her carrier (which is huge!) in advance so she doesn't get too stressed about being in it.

I think I'll need a sedative just thinking about her being locked up all alone down there
