Hi
I am confused.. If anybody can tell me:

I hold California Driver License (6 months old). which license type would I be getting ? G1 or G2 ?

Acc to the website:
http://www.ontario.ca/driving-and-roads/exchange-foreign-drivers-licence

It says under 2 years I need to take ONE road test (the G2 road test)

and under that it says I can drive with my G1 license..
But what about G2 license ?
shouldnt be I getting G2 license ? If I just have one test to go for (to get full)

G1 means I cannot drive alone... But I need to take G2 road test (which means test on highways, streets)... how is that possible ? if I cannot go on highway on G1 license

http://www.ontario.ca/driving-and-roads/get-g-drivers-licence-new-drivers
(I got to know about the license types)

this all means that I just got waived of written exam (G1 license)?

If anyone can suggest me..

I am just panicking...
I cannot drive alone for almost 18months ! (as I need to get full 2 years driving first in order to give G2 test)

If I am wrong in giving information... please correct me

Reply: anyone had experience in exchanging US DL to Ontario DL ? please share

Hi UsCa, do not panic :). Yet.

There is something called an international driver's license and it is good for one year for people that already have their DLs. Are you in Canada or the US right now? If you are in the US call your version of the DL office or the AAA and inquire. If you are in Canada then call a local CAA office and inquire. If they cannot sort you out, then you can panic :D. Good luck!

In our experience, we got a G2 license in exchange for a six-month old license from elsewhere, so you should be fine. As to the other, my understanding is that an international license is for the purpose of translating your existing one to another language. Best just get your Ontario one now. Your Ontario license with photo counts as "proof" of address when it comes to getting your Ontario Health card too (not sure if you have any issue with that).

Hi truesmile, just to clarify my international license was between 2 English speaking countries, so it is not just for translating purpose; however, I agree with your good advice above, especially of doing one step only and being able to use the DL for the OHIP card. Blessings.

So, you also got G2 license in exchange for a six month old license ? really ?
I mean you can drive alone ... and just need to take G2 road test ?

(I am sorry again asking you the same question but I am so panic, and your post is kinda shocking me...in a good way)

I will be in Canada in few weeks.. already got my COPR...just looking for flights... :D

so, is what you said is actually the reality , I will also get this exchange thing done asap when I land

another question.. did you have to submit the record request as well ?

You've only been driving for 6 months or is your current license only 6 months old (e.g., you've actually been driving for 10 years)?

If the former, than yes, I think you get the G1 license as per the website. You skip the written test and the first road test and only take the second road test after 18 months of driving in Ontario, then you get a full license.

If the latter, you should be fine.... I assume California licenses indicate when you first got the license as the issue date. (I actually had a problem with this because on my NY license "issue date" was when the license was printed, so it would change every time I renewed the license or changed my address without an indication of how long I had actually been driving. If this is a problem you can show them your old license(s) to prove you've been driving over 2 years or get a driver's abstract from the state DMV showing how long you've had the license.)

Sadly,I come under the first category :(

Okay. so i need to give one road test...(as per the website says)
so what does G1 license means ?
I cant drive alone ? (not on highways even)
then how I would i give the test on highway if my license would not let me allow to drive there ?

I am so confused in this thing ....

G1 states I can drive with one person accompanying me who has G for 4years and NOT on highways

and G2 road test states I need to give test on streets as well on highways...

Its so confusing...

How can a person give test where he has never drove..?

This is really confusing

I would suggest you to go yourself and check what applies to you

Hmmm.... I see the confusion. I think the first website must have a typo. I re-checked the Ontario license I got a long time ago (didn't end up moving then). It's G2 (because of the NY license issue date problem).

So, you mean to say I will get G2 in exchanging my 6months old license ?

(pleaseeeeee say yes.... :( :( :( :( :( )

I believe your driving experience needs to be longer than just 6 months to exchange it for a G2.
How about calling the phone number listed there at the MTO and ask to confirm/get the real answer right from the source?

I would personally go myself to MTO once I land...

But if I dont get G2 then whats the point of getting G1 ? If I cant drive on highways...how can I give G2 road test straightaway ?

now my confusion is how can a person give G2 road test if he is not allowed to drive on highways ? G1 doesnt allow you that...

thats completely insane of MTO's website

You can on the G1, you just need a G driver next to you. You can also drive on them with the G2 as well I'm a G2 driver and I've driven on the 401.

I just had a talk with a relative who runs a driving school business from past 25years.
he said I will be getting G2 license and just need to give one test and if passed then will get G
