Travel documents

Transport companies, such as airlines, must ensure you have proper, valid travel documents when you enter Canada. If you do not have the proper documents, you may be delayed or denied boarding.

On March 11, 2010, CIC amended the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations to clarify the factors used to determine which travel documents can be used to apply for a visa, and to travel to or enter Canada.

Under the new Regulations, the following travel documents are considered unreliable and are not acceptable for entry into Canada:

* any passport claiming to have been issued by Somalia,
* non-machine readable passports issued by the Czech Republic,
* temporary passports issued by the Republic of South Africa, and
* provisional passports issued by Venezuela.

This list is subject to change. Check it regularly for up-to-date information.

I also heard that it is advisable to get machine readable passports in any case if your country is already issuing one. Even if your current passport is non machine readable and has validity beyond one year, it is said that the visa offices still might request that you get a machine readable one.

If you don't want to delay your visa issuance, it is best you get your machine readable passport now so that it will save you time later on.

I heard in some countries it takes 6 weeks or so to get the new passport. ( machine readable ).

Hi Okshan,

Interesting information. The USA isn't accepting non-machine readable passports so I guess it's natural that Canada would follow suit.

How's your process going? Any news?

Take care and have a good week.

Not a thing to worry. If the PPR is thru, u get an SJTD [Single-Journey Travel Document] from your CHC, in lieu of such passports, to travel to Canada.

Dear Shakira and Qorax,

thank you for your comments. Shakira, I am still waiting for the passport request. I have to first send in the police clearance certificate of my husband. Within this week, I will do.
Hoping that the PPR will come soon after that. It's been a month since I've done my medicals. Hope security checks are all done as well.

Thank you always to both of you and wpc71 for your support and encouragement. Peace!

i don't have a machine readable passport. I am resident in GCC, so do you mean i've to travel back to my home country get a machine readable passport and wait for CIC to send me medical request then passport?

What is a machine readable passport?
Is it the one where the number is in perforated form?

@Honolulu,

My dear, your assumption is totally out of gear; although I wish it was true!

See here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine-readable_passport

It says all! Actually the special characters in embedded codes below one's photograph should be deemed the machine readable section.

Best Wishes,

Bestpal

Well Visa has been stamped by the Buffalo office.
And my pasport is definitley not machine readable as per the wikipedia description.
Don't tell me they will stop me at my POE when landing.

Relax buddies,

MRPs (Machine Readable Passports) r not a requirement for entering Canada, except from the Czech Republic.

The following are not considered travel documents for the purposes of subsections R50(1) or R52(1):
-Any passport purporting to have been issued by Somalia;
-Non-machine readable passports issued by the Czech Republic;
-Temporary Passports issued by the Republic of South Africa; and
-Provisional Passports issued by Venezuela.
