Dear All,

I am extremely glad to see many of you here at this Forum.

For more than a year, I did not write. It has been almost a year that I arrived in Montreal.
I was either lucky or lazy to find a job.....!!! Because, last September, just after my arrival I found an ordinary job which I am still continuing at the Hilton Garden Inn, near Montreal Airport as the Night Auditor and kept myself busy.

Well, I was happy because, I neither had done my Comparative Evaluation for Studies Done Outside Québec/Canada, nor I had had any Canadian work experience. However, one thing is sure that I did not have to wait long to find my livelihood. Now I am thinking if I should try something else to make life better.

I remember very well our very first joiner with me of this forum Friend Syed Rahman. Hope he is doing well. I also remember our regular friends like Jewel, S.K, SimonBlue, Rafiq, Habib, Tito,Jalams2000, Jnathan, Ozy and many….

I know that now a days I can not write, but of course, it is really extraordinary, the way you have kept our Forum alive and progressive. I am really very happy.

My best wishes to all of you. I wish all of you a successful Immigration and Integration to Canada. Greetings of Eid to all of you too.

Sohel09 !!!!!

omg, you are alive and doing well !!
yes, I remember you, nasim- think he asked for some $$ from me to fill up my forms, syedrahman etc.

Nice to know that youre at least surviving in Canada at this time of recession.
arjo of this forum came back to Dhaka after spending 2-3 months on Troonto, he failed to get any job, so a shocker for us. He stayed in Etobicoke which is in North York. Montreal is beautiful, its Moon shaped bus terminal and of course its a French speaking Territory where unlike other parts of Canada people start talking in French with anyone. Montreal has Arong and I hope you are having a festive Eiid this time with many Bangladeshi migrants.

Do come sometimes and share your experiences with us. Which part of Montreal do you live in?

Stay well !

Dear All,

It is my holiday today. Actually I planned for it on the Eid day at least a month ago. Thanks a lot for Farima's wonderful "Laccha Shemai". Dear Moshiur, I would rather expect your happy presence in Canada first. Trust me, when you will physically see and know about this country, you will meet many people and be able to analyse the possibilities and challenges to build your future. Then you will have enough time and enough ideas to think about your future.

Dear Jnathan, I live very close to the Montréal Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport. It is approximately 15 minutes west of the Montréal Downtown. But trust me, Montréal is very Americanized in the sense of, almost everyone can OR do communicate in English here. Public buses are almost very regularly late by few minutes while Metros (underground) are quite on time. There are about Ten to Twelve thousands (as I have heard) Bangladeshi live in greater Montréal. Many of them either have a Dépaneur (grocery shop) or Restaurant (called Indian Restaurant) I do not know why not Bangladeshi Restaurant!!!! But you can buy almost all sort of Deshi Fish (Frozen) including Hilsha in those grocery shops.

Two interesting things about motor vehicles that I have noticed so far. 1) In Québec all motor vehicles have only one registration number plate that is placed only at the backside of the car. And 2) This is probably for all over Canada that you will always see headlights of motor vehicles are always switched on regardless day or night.

By the way, I just heard of the news of Earthquake in Bangladesh!! Hope it is not that serious!! May Allah the almighty bless and protect us all. Bye for now.

Thanks for keeping in touch with this thread. You are the one who started this and sharing lots of info. I know one guy named mediajunkie who is also from Bangladesh but has been raised in Singapore shares lots lots of info with us. One thing you havent shared yet that its a costly country for 3rd world citizens. So one should spend $$$$ before he could manage a job. Housing and commuting tops the list in more $ hungry zones.

Sohel09, Montreal (They call it "Montry AaL") is beautiful indeed. I have heard people said that Montral city is very much similar to Paris. How much does it cost for one STM ride? it costs $3.00 now in Toronto which was 2.50 only a year ago. I didnt see Motor lights being kept ON during daylight , may be they do it when the sky is overcast.

I Heard the EQ in BD as well, it was shocking for many, everyone got irked by it. It was a powerful one, had it stayed for more than 5 seconds, the result would have been devastating. there are possibilites of a bigger one. Let us pray so that nothing happens.

Keep sharing your experiences with us, let us know why you chose Montreal when 99% of the PRs choose Toronto.

Good luck !

You are very right J. Well, I chose Québec for immigration because I wanted to have the touch of French environment and culture. Although, in Bangladesh we grow up with a mentality that makes us think more comfortable with an English environment abroad. My six years long stay in Swiss French part developed a keen desire in me for French environment and culture. But Montréal is not what I expected. May be I am wrong but I have no complain either, as Montréal is Canadian and it is more North American than it claims to be French.

This summer I went to the Québec city which is really beautiful and looks quite French or European. Québec city is at least ten times cleaner and more environment friendly than Montréal. But on the other hand it is five hours drive from the capital Ottawa. It is smaller than Montréal which means less commercial activity, which means less job opportunities and of course it is Colder than Montréal.

In English they call Montry AaL in French it is M-O-R-E-A-L. There is a little Hill approximately 750 ft. high at the centre (just behind the Mcgill University) of the city which is known as Mount Royal in French Mont (mo) Royal. The name of Montréal has come from the Mount Royal.

STM (Société de transport de Montréal) has several Fare plans. Single way ticket costs $2.75 which can be used let's say first time for the Métro AND second time as you get off the Métro and need a connecting bus (or the opposite way) for your home. I personally use a Monthly pass called OPUS regular card costs $68.00 for an unlimited use within the island of Montréal only.

I completely agree with you that Canada is expensive for us. Montréal is no exception. Let us put it in a very simple way. A single room studio/apartment for one person only (bath and toilet in sharing basis) in the Montréal downtown will cost at least $500.00 a month. A double occupancy accommodation will cost approximately $700.00 a month. You have to count another $50.00 or more for telephone, Transports can be more expensive if you have a private car. Then you will need food and personal expenses. In my opinion in Montréal it will be almost very hard to survive with less than $1000.00 (per person) a month. However, with a moderate job $18/$20 an hour life is not too bad.

But please do not forget that you must pay both Federal(5%) and Provincial(7.5%) taxes on every single purchase in Québec, which does not appear on the price tags. I heard that many people may not like a higher income in Québec because the more you earn the more you have to pay for your income tax.

Let us say if someone earns $24000.00 a year in Québec S/he will pay $3800.00 + as income tax. In Ontario it is much cheaper which will be +/- $2800.00. But Ontario will probably be more expensive than Québec. So, life standard does not vary much.

Please do not be bothered too much. Our preliminary target should be finding some sort of moderate job for a start within three months of arrival. Then with course of time, you will come to know when you will be ready for a change. At least that is what I believe. No more today, But let me pass my special regards to media junkie.

By the way, where do you live in J?

Thanks for the long reply sohel09.
People who are bound to Montreal would be highly helped from your post.
Yes, being in Canada is rather an easy thing than experiencing the uphill task to find a survival job at the first few months after someone is landed.

I have lived in 2-3 different countries in my life. Will share everything once I get my PR done, God willingly.
