Thanks very much for this detailed thread about landing.

I have not seen much information with regards to proof of funds for AINP applicants completing the landing .I am more curious about people doing the landing and returning by AVR to states.

1.Could any one kindly throw some light on how much they carried when doing the landing and returned to Usa.Also was this in the form of cash or checques or american express or other traveller cheques.

2.I know people moving permanently will have an larger amount for setting up the family and everything immediately. Is there an minimum amount from the perspective of the officer depending on family size.

3.Also did any of the AVR guys get an question if they are returning back to Usa from the officer .

We crossed the border to settle in Calgary , the officer at Coutts just asked whether we are carrying more than 10K in hand then. We said no, as we just had 2000 bucks in hand. He did not ask for proof of funds. Mind u, this is @ Coutts.
Before starting, I called customs Canada and asked them about the money, they said you can bring any amount you pleased later as long as there is a legal source of income. If money is earned after u become a permanent resident(only after u establish residence - this is a legal term-with so many fine prints) , you will have to pay tax.
To open the account, I used BOA check and gave it to Scotia bank.

I am still using US credit cards with no international transaction fee as Scotia just gave each of us $500 credit card.

To ur 2nd query, It is dependent upon family size and is given in CIC website. But I think, provincial nominees do not require proof of funds. We were not asked any.
I hope this answers ur query.

Hi Sinbad,

Can you elaborate on"I am still using US credit cards with no international transaction fee as Scotia just gave each of us $500 credit card"

1. how are u able to use US c Cards without transaction fee.
2.Did they give you Secured C Card for $500 or the normal one
3. Did you give personal Check to open your account with Scotia, and how long it Will take to go through( getting funds in your Scotia Account)

Thanks for your help, in advance

1. how are u able to use US c Cards without transaction fee.
There are cards which charge no international transaction fees like venture by capital one.
2.Did they give you Secured C Card for $500 or the normal one
Normal one- 500 for me, 500 for my wife.
3. Did you give personal Check to open your account with Scotia, and how long it Will take to go through( getting funds in your Scotia Account)
I gave personal BOA check. On hold depends on the person who opens your account, I think. It still is not cleared; on hold for 21 days.
I would suggest you shop around for bank accounts. There are people who used RBC,TD bank etc. Ask them.
Also Scotia's (may be most banks )exchange rate when u buy CAD will be 0.2 less than what is posted on internet.Like today's is 0.97 but when u buy, you get 0.95; ie, for 1000 bucks you get just 950.00 CAD. On the day, I opened the account, the rate was 0.94; so I had to buy CAD for 0.92 :(.
Also my US card gives me 0.97.....

Hi! Are you already in calgary? I am moving from ny to calgary.

So what time do you think will be great? I am thinking for April. I mean I was also considering at least 3-4 days because 1 night stay in Chicago, 1 night stay in Bismarck North Dakota and then either Havre MT or Great Falls.

NY - Chicago 10-12 hours drive
Chicago - Bismarck ND 13-14 hours drive
Bismarck - Sweet Grass MT 10-13 hours drive
Sweet Grass MT - Calgary 2-3 hours (including Car import paperwork/immigration time)

I will be flying to Edmonton this weekend to complete landing. I will be there for a week. I will post my experience once I'm back.

I have one question. Can the officer withhold my PR status and cards if I tell him that I will be going back to US in a week and won't be able to receive the cards myself? Has anyone else encountered this situation?

North West is a nice area with your family if you're single pretty much everywhere :)
