May be it's beneficial, but I think it should not be important from visa point of view. Based on personal experience, I would highly recommend to carry some general medicine for 3 to 4 months (I did the same), it's very costly in Canada. Your are being covered under health insurance only upon the registration at school, not upon arrival.

I don't know about his university, but I'm being covered from 15th Dec onwards valid from the moment I reach a Port of Entry in Canada and even on vacation to home country/study related visit for upto 2 months during studies.

no need if u have already paid for insurance in ur clg or uni fees
