So I just got my open work permit from CIC. My wife is sponsoring me inland here in Canada. The process took a very long time but it was well worth the wait. But I just have two questions 1. Now that I have received my open work permit am I able to leave Canada on vacation and come back or do I have to wait till I get my actual permanent residence card? 2. Do I have to go to service canada and get another sin number? I had a sin number from a work permit that I had or does the sin numbers transfer? Please advise. Thank You

1. an owp doesn't change the fact that you must remain in canada for the processing. an OWP does not guarantee re-entry, so any trips outside of canada are still done "at your own risk".

2. I belieive the same SIN will be reactivated, and you have to actually go down to Service Canada to do it. the government does not know you just recived an owp. it is your responsibility to supply service canada with your new information.

When you land, you will get a new SIN number. The one you have now is a temporary one.

My husband literally got his new one the same day he landed in Hamilton. After he got his COPR (WOOT!) we were ushered down a hall to a different room with someone from a travelling Service Canada office who set him up with his permanent SIN.
