Hear is my story...take the time to read it, if nothing you might at
least save a few pennies and a couple of sleepless nights.

I have been a silent viewer on this forum, I have read a lot of
arguments and I appreciate the zeal of most people. The positive
approach some people have displayed in spite of all the negative and
discouraging information is really inspiring.

I have been in Canada for over 25 months now, migrated from India, to
quickly answer some of the biting questions in your head....

1, Am I doing well---Yes I am, maybe not as good as I would have liked
it but I am happy.
2, Was I doing well back in India--- Very well.
3, Am I happy to have made the switch----No doubt about that.
4, Did I have to struggle and go through hard times----- Very very hard
times, I've had to hang on by my tooth and claws.
5, Would I do it again---Damn sure I would.
BUT
6, Would I go about it in the same way that I did----NO, This post is to
help you guys avoid the same mistake that I made
and to give something back to people like me 25 months ago, I would have
NEVER been able to do it without the help of many good hearted people,
God bless em. So here is my story......

But before that I just want to mention that I have met a lot of
immigrants, some who have done well some not so well and others worse.
The common line among all the immigrants were certain qualifications and
these are a must according to me and my experience if you have to
succeed, if you don't have these qualifications then you will be putting
yourself in deep trouble.

At the risk of sounding dreadfully dull and at a horrible effort at
instigating motivation here are the qualification you need to have:

a, Determination... If you are not absolutely determined its a waste of
time.
b, Perseverance...The heart to go on in spite of all odds, never failing
to loose the strength to take another step, NEVER NEVER give up, its
your life and you cant give up on it.
c, Hard work....Try to be the best in whatever you do, don't work hard
because you have to or because you are being watched just work hard coz
you WANT to. Even if you are polishing shoes and if you are the best in
doing that you will achieve glory someday. NOT BORN TO BE A MEDIOCRE
attitude.
d, Good Heart.... A good heart to help people in need, may not just be
financially (if that is not possible) but a kind word, a passionate hug,
an encouraging line to any fellow in need. A genuine good wish and
prayer from someone thankful can even move the Heart of GOD.

So, my story then, My God, its just starting, even I am tired already.
I'll make it short.

Got my visa after a long and painful wait...Quit our jobs, my wife and
me (first mistake, will explain later) scooped up all our savings, got
our children out of school with appropriate planning so that they don't
miss out a year. Did our lil research, said our prayers and got on the
plane. Landed in Vancouver, some website told us that this was the
worlds best place to live and raise a family (mistake number two).
Checked into the hotel and began house hunting, looked at all the nice
neighbourhoods and selected a house based on our budget (third mistake)
so far so good, we thought. Put our kids to school and began the
mammoth task of job hunting ( 25-30 days and 2000 dollars down).

Me wife and me are well qualified and based on our experiences we made
absolutely wonderful resumes and started applying ( fourth mistake).
Amazing responses, calls every day but that was that, stopped at calls
after realising we don't have any Canadian qualification or experience.
We were not too worried initially but as time passed it started to get a
little uncomfortable( down by 3 months and 4000 dollars). We then
started trying to get help and advise from the locals, mixed responses,
very conflicting as everyone were from different circumstances. We then
had to downgrade our resumes (as one of the refusal feedback was that we
were over qualified) and start applying, still luck eluded us. Every
dollar spent was like fire in the belly growing hotter. Five-six months
later we were desperate and ready to take any job that was available to
us. A month later, my wife got a job and few weeks later it was my turn
to get lucky to get a job.

These were not nearly ideal jobs that we were hoping for but some income
was better than nothing. It killed me to see my wife doing data entry
who was working for ICICI bank back in India and managing a whole branch
and had won many awards for being the best run branch , just typing away
8 hours a day. I never really had the courage to ask how she felt seeing
me flip burgers when I had 120 employees working for me at Hewlett
Packard back in India.

Though both of us were earning still we were not able to make enough
money to stop digging away from our savings. The house rent, bills,
travel to & fro to work, food and the most expensive of the lot, child
minders for our kids, to pick them up from school and take care until my
wife gets back home. I was working over time, nearly 12 hours a day but
could not sustain ourselves, we then switched our plan and I took up night shift
and weekends while my wife worked in the day, I would wake up cook and
get the kids back home and put them in front of the telly and pass out
on the couch. I was ready to leave for work and would be waiting at the
door to rush out to get the train, sometimes I must admit, with wet eyes
while walking to the train station. At all time, I tried real hard to put
a brave face for my wife and my two little angels, one kiss at the door
everyday was all the interaction I had with my wife. That and kisses
from my two little angels is what kept me going.

Even though we had figured out a way to save the child minders costs we
were just making enough to live a very limited life. My children
deserved more time from us, at least from one of us. I dint want them to
grow up without that. I forced my wife to work only part time, moved to
a smaller house, took up work for 12 hours every night, 6 days a week. I
could not miss a single days work, no work no money.
Life seemed a little better for a while, at least for my wife and kids.

When all seemed in control ( at least better than a few months ago )
another blow (forgive me for saying that but that's what it seemed like
at that time), I was hardly with my wife a few times since we started
working and she was pregnant for the second time ( we had twins the
first time) in spite of all the caution we had taken. The irony was, we
had to try for almost a year the first time around to get pregnant. If
that was not all, it was twins AGAIN. The odds of that happening, twins
twice, was 10 million to one or so I was told. This was about the time
when I could sense my wife giving up. I could not imagine how we could
afford the expenses of additional two babies in our present circumstances.

To cut it short, we had to go through more hardships, we had to move
again and again until we were in what one would call a single room
apartment.

Was this what we left everything and came here?
Was this the life in Canada?
How could we have been so wrong in our assessment?
Are we losers and should go back home crawling like one?

BUT WAIT NO, I thought,

If I we had the luck of having two twins which is very very rare then we
surely should be blessed. And I will not let all the sacrifices my
family and I have made go for a waste, I did not want my kids to see
their father give up when I have always told them never to give up. I
was even more determined to move on.

Things turned around, of all the mistakes that I made I had done one
thing right, I had really put in my best at work, nobody could do stuff
in the kitchen like I could. For most people out there this was just a
job, for me it was food in my kids bellies and the last straw of hope in
keeping my dreams alive.

I got so many appreciations and management started noticing me, My work
was perfect no matter there was someone watching over me or not. As a
matter of fact I used to perform even better when I was not supervised.
the management quickly saw this and moved the night shift supervisor to
another branch to save costs. There was no impact on the business even
though I was all alone in the kitchen all night. It was barely any time
I was made a supervisor and I had enough money now and did not have to
work 12 hours and 6 days. But I did, as my wife had stopped working coz
of her pregnancy, we took this opportunity to get her to study and get
some certifications in her line of work which were recognised in Canada.
She came out with flying colours as she was twice as smart than any
certification she sat for. She scored 100% in every damn thing.

We had two healthy little angels again, within four months she started
applying with the Canadian certifications and she got a decent job,
within a very short time her employers realised her potential and moved
her to a different role with more responsibilities and more salary as well.

She did not eat for two days until I agreed to quit
my job and stay home with my kids and take up some kind of studying
myself. The first few days after I quit I slept for 15 hours every day,
it seemed like heaven as I had not had so much sleep in many months. I
then started studying at home and taking care of the babies while my
wife worked. She was getting paid more than what we had earned
collectively so it was fine.

I finished a few certifications and also got decent job.
We both feel that we can grow in the companies that we are currently in
because of our experience and knowledge and also the effort we have put
in to get so far.

We have now moved a good two bed apartment and got ourselves a second-had Ford Mondeo, and now we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and any hope of realising our dreams.

Now let me talk about the mistakes I think I made and what I would have
done differently if I had to do this all over again.

1st Mistake -, Quitting both our jobs. My wife was working for an Indian
Company( ICICI) but I was working for a global company (HEWLETT
PACKARD). I should have tried to get a internal transfer, Global
companies do hire from within. I agree that it would not have been easy
but I am sure not as difficult as what I went through. I might have had
to go down several levels and wait for maybe a year or two which is
still a worthwhile thing to do.

If that was absolutely not possible I would then quit my job leave my
wife and kids behind and go to Canada myself.

2, Mistake - Trying to settle down with out first getting a job. If I am
alone I can get a temporary accommodation and be more flexible to move
where ever there is opportunity, even move to different cities, with
family it is not possible. this will also keep my costs very very low.

3,Mistake - Unless you related to tourism and hospitality industry don't
go to Vancouver. Calgary is good for people in oil industry but as a
general rule of thumb there are much more jobs in Toronto that any other
place. There are many immigrants there , right, but this is not entirely
bad as the employers in Toronto are more used to the Immigrants and are
less biased compared to other places.

4, Mistake - I expected to get a great job, like the one I had back in
India right away. This does not happen with 99% of the people. You cant
just pick up from where you left unless you have some kind of Canadian
qualification or internally transferred from within your company.
As soon as you land get yourself some/any job that you can land yourself in and ensure that your monthly expenditure is less that what you earn. Yes you might have to compromise a great deal on where you live and stuff. Make sure you spend as little money as possible from your savings. Immediately get into some kind of course/certification in your line that is recognised in Canada, use your savings for that. Don't waste even one day.

Make sure once you have secured some certifications and you are looking for a job that is in your line of work. You would already have a job, however bad but a job nevertheless. All your focus should be to get a job in your line of work and not towards getting a little more money, this is because if you get to do something in your line of work you will naturally do well.

Once you have set your foot in and fairly confident its time to get your wife..... NOT KIDS, just wife. I know it can be very difficult to leave kids behind but you will have to make some sacrifices to ensure that you do it the right way.

Now that your wife is there, just get her to do some part time work focus entirely on getting Canadian qualification in her line of work.

Always remember there will be totally unexpected things that will come up ( my wife's pregnancy for example ) and make sure you have put away some money for emergencies, however little, something is better than nothing.

Only get a permanent family home when you and your wife are working, in your respective line of work and the get your kids. Things would have been a lot easier if I had done it this way rather than the way I adopted.

THE SATISFACTION YOU GET AND THE WAY YOUR SELF CONFIDENCE IS BOOSTED WILL BE WORTH ALL THE EFFORT. ONCE YOU HAVE SETTLED IN YOU WILL HAVE VERY FEW AND JUST MUNDANE THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT, LIFE IN CANADA WILL SEEM VERY ENJOYABLE THEN.

Please feel free to ask me any questions that may crop up, I wish this was helpful and God bless you all.

success ( ? ) story...
Hi all,
Sorry for a long silence. We landed in Oct 04 and spent first few months in hunting for a job..that invloved everything from attending India Rainbow workshop to cold calling and networking and job scams( refer my earlier post on RD Group International). After 3 months 3 weeks I got a good job thro a professional whom I met on www.linkedin.com. I started in a contract position that was converted to a full time one after 2 months of joining. I got the job only because at that point the company needed someone very badly and I was the right fit plus I was recommended by an insider. My resume was an extremely ordinary one at that point but my previous experience was given consideration and not how my resume was framed.
It has been over 3 months in this company and I would like to share my experiences with all of you.
1.There is NO RACISM at work place. When I was being considered for the full time position, there were 3 other Canadians interviewed for the same position and I was given preference over all of them. In fact, I was offered one level higher than the interviewed position. In our manufacturing unit, there are immigrants in good positions from all over the world ? Romania, Yugoslavia, Sudan, Pakistan, China and India.
2.People are generally very helpful and give a lot of respect to your opinions and value your skills. I took a while to adjust to the Canadian accent. Initially I did as much work as possible thro emails but in two weeks I got used to it. I felt worst once when one of my colleagues had hard time following my accent on phone and requested me to send an email!! But when I met her personally after a few days, she was very nice to me..it is just the same for them?they too take a while to adjust to our accent.
3.The amount of computerization done here in work places is very high and one has to be really adept at using computers.

Answers to GG?s common questions :

1.I have an engineering background. I work in a project division handling post order activities. The work is similar to what I did back home?.it is much simpler but the volume is very high and you realize the significance of the much used terms in Canada such as ?fast paced? and ?multitasking?
2.I did not do any labour job after coming to Canada. Fortunately for us, we have a close relative here with whom we are staying. That is a big moral support when one does not have to worry about paying up the bills and can really focus on the job hunt.
3.I am satisfied with my job?and see good career prospects in Canada.
4.My spouse is yet to find a job. He has not gone in for any labour jobs as we have accepted that it takes time in Canada to get the right job.
5.The life for a common man in Canada is peaceful and hassle free.
6. About my kids..I am happy that they do not have to go thro the rat race in India and they will have a good life here even if they turn out to be average in studies. But I am too scared at times when I see the teens here. I think we have a long way to go!!
7.It has really been a major decision to uproot ourselves and come to another country. I am 37 and my husband is 42 and we keep feeling at times that if we had come here 10 years back, it would have been much simpler. In the morning when we open the newspaper or watch TV in the evening, somehow we do not feel at home! The pleasure that we derived by reading The Times of India or the local daily would never be possible with The Toronto Star. I do not know if any one of you had a similar feeling.

I can not say right now that I am successful. I had much lavish life back home as far as spending quality time with kids was concerned. My long term goal is to work from home so that I can take proper care of the family. I have taken the first step to it by making a website of Indian books for children that I intend to promote in North America. Thanks to Chandresh and Blue Lobster for giving an encouraging response to me when I first discussed this concept with them. I am purposely not mentioning the site address as I do not wish to use this forum as a platform to advertise for free.

Company registration and Canadian customs was an extremely pleasant experience. I think it may be a very good idea for one person in the family to have a job and another person to pursue business. The atmosphere here is very encouraging for small entrepreneurs.

Last but not the least?to all those who have some great ideas on the knowledge of English language and accent and CBSc / ICSc schools?.I studied in a vernacular school and I can strongly say that people do not give a damn as long as you speak well and are able to express your ideas and thoughts to them. You do not have to change your accent for them.

Story of Explorer101 :

http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t40042.0.html

I AM FLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYING TO CANADAAAAAAA, I JUST GOT IT, ONE MONTH AFTER MEDICALS .

I made it despite the fact that I am handicap. I don't have right leg and am using artificial limb. I mentioned the same in my application also. God had been gracious to me and my family. It was my wish to see my kids growing up in Canada and despite my disability I succeeded. I was not born handicap.

I prepared my application In JAN 2009 and was in the process of forwarding it to CIO; unfortunately in Feb 09 I met with accident. Some jerk driving car rashly hit me at the speed of 70-80 Kms/ Hr, i was standing 4-5 feet down the road. My leg was crushed, 2 pieces. Had to undergo 3 operations in 2 months and my leg could not be saved. While in the hospital, the wish to take my kids to Canada gave me courage to fight and live and more than half of the process of my application was done by me from my bed/ wheelchair. Filed my application in the last week of July 2009. Did IELTS, gathered PCC, renews PP's, registered marriage. Remained on bed for 6 months and was conscious that i may be rejected in medicals if i fail to walk properly and do my own work.

After the wounds dried up I had artificial limb, day and night walked to have better balance. Initially i had to take help of walker later on walking stick which I managed to dispense with. Everyday I climbed stairs 15-20 times in a day. Soon, I became independent started doing household chores as well as to do office work. Medicals came and the doctor made me to climb stairs- which i did, told to remove clothes - i did without assistance and wear clothes. Asked if i can drive car. I never used stick in front of him. Walked slowly but firmly.

It worked and I got VISA.

Now, for me another challenge starts. Due to my physical condition I can not do labour intensive work. I have heard a lot about the difficulties faced by new immigrants. I have a chalked out a plan which i would try to execute. I will bridge my education and experience with canadian studies. Canadian education will help me in getting good job.

One thing is sure - In Canada I will not go down without a fight. I will never come back as a looser. Today, my dreams had been fulfilled and I can see a better future for my kids.

Success Stories

Let me share my (Alok - alok.sarma@gmail.com) experience of coming to Canada as an immigrant. I landed on 25-Jul-05 from Detroit, USA and my family came on Dec’ 2005 after I got a job and settled down. I had gone through real tough time for at least 2 months, but I am now perfectly settled down and looking for family business, franchise and other opportunities. I got job in Deloitte multinational within 3 weeks after giving 5 rounds of interview. Also, I had offer in Royal Bank of Canada, and various other good offers happened in same 3 weeks. I joined with same salary which I was getting in USA, and a very good job with full comfort which I never had in my last 15 years working in all big giant companies in IT located in Mumbai and USA. I am now able to go back at home after 8 hours and no more weekend spending in office work. I am also allowed to work from home if needed.

Today, after long time after tightening all the loose ends of settlement, I thought to write my success story in Canadian Desi. I could have avoided doing this, but realized that it is my duty to write here. Let me admit that site really changed my life and helped me to prepare my roadmap and laid the path of success. The examples of numerous events of failures, going back to your country, quit Canada etc. really put me on my toes. Those risks haunted me and gave me more strength for the last 2 years and helped me to really do a very good planning to combat those risks, well in advance. You name it and I can tell you what I did best. I was really shocking and frustrated reading these stories, but let me tell you those are all facts, really true. I realized that and felt every inches of it after landing here in Canada. Here are some example of tips I got in Canadian Desi e.g. getting rental/shared house, getting PR Card when you come through Detroit, Car Insurance, Transport, Health Card queue, finding recruiters’ contact, where to hunt, food, opening bank account, dress, keeping various flavors of your resume, etiquette in interviews, so on and so forth.

One day I thought, let me see the best practices, success stories and I found few of those but analyzed carefully. But the tips were solid in those nicely described emails and I sincerely appreciate it.

This site might help all those who have already nurtured their dream and took there bold steps to come here. Again, I really admire this site. It gives you the real experience. I wish all the new comers should feel the duty and obligation to write here and enrich this site to pave the way to people like us opting to immigrate.

I am a computer professional with Data Warehouse, Cognos, Data Modeling and little web skills with 15 years of experience. After applying to come to Canada from USA, I started making human network with leads in Canada, did job market search, skills in demand study, resume building, interview preparation spending nights and nights without sleep. I aim was not to go back to India and slog in office cubicle for 14 hrs, 6 days a week. Even, I did few US based certifications, spent money to know the hot skills, made inventory of all recruiters and operators in job market, evaluation of rental house, web portal search etc., did whatever it takes to catch up the skills required in Canadian market which is similar to USA top notch. You need to be on top of technology, labor or anything latest happening in your area. This is a high tech country with sound economy and surplus trade. You need to work hard to know the Canadian market before you land and get fully prepared for interview. This will save your savings after you land.

Interviewers prefer face to face talk. You must have two solid references preferable whom you are reporting. There are lots of fine techniques which I learnt across. You must change your resume and have different flavors of your resume based on role needed. It doesn’t mean you fabricate but change the presentation the way interviewer would like to see. Don’t expect easy interview, the companies and recruiters are very serious and if you work hard you will get it. During first 3 weeks, when I was hunting for jobs in computer, I also tried other jobs like Security Officer, retail, and those were easy. To survive here is easy.

There are numerous dedicated government organization to help the immigrants. Immigration settlement is a big issue in Canada, and it can topple a government if not handled properly. If you show interest, and willing to work, and open minded, you can do well in Canada. Now I am in midst of thousands of immigrants hearing their experiences. Few people returns though who cannot change their mindset, or reduce their hang ups and not able to change themselves and absorb the culture shock. It is a different world. You need to accept the challenges, and these challenges are not uncommon. If you go to USA or other westernized country for the first time you will face the same thing. Example, you need to be expert in driving, you need to be open to various types of foods and culture, ready to change your English accent, mix with people etc. You need to understand when you immigrate anywhere in the world, it is a great risk, things will not be bed of roses. Immigration was never smooth, it was more tough before us. You have to have lots of courage, contingency plan, safety money and solid Plan B. I sent my family to India for six months and came alone here. That was my plan B. As I got job real quick, my family came here, unless my plan B was to go back. I was ready to do any job, and then slowly go to my line i.e. in Computer.

Success Stories (Contd)
What I found here that there are thousands of labor jobs, odd jobs, job from home, small business etc. It is nice to see all people here work hard. Most of the people in Toronto are immigrants. The older ones are now nicely established, well educated and rich. I met people China, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Cuba, Fiji, Ethiopia, Russia, England, USA, Taiwan, you name a country and some one is there.

One common thing I found all across. When I asked all my immigrant friends why they choose Canada, and all said something in common which is interesting and I came for the same reason too. They said to give better education to their next generation, to maintain a decent peaceful quality life, not to face fundamental problems which they faced in their countries e.g. not water in the morning, no electricity, political problem, bandh, terrorism, horrible transport commuting system, workplace exploitation etc.

At least you get lot of odd jobs to survive which you might not find in other countries. In this western world all type of jobs are respectable. I have many good friends who are mechanical engineer, chartered accountant and they did not find job here, and now they own a very high profile restaurant, and they are indeed very happy. As Canada is high tech country, it needs people with latest skill set and education relevant to this world. This country needs large number of immigrants, but they also need skills presentable or convertible to their skill sets as per market demand. Government is working towards such recognition process. I heard lot of immigrants who did odd jobs, saved money and then did some diploma, degrees and now earning a lot. It takes time, perfect planning and acumen. Don’t expect everything will be in your favor, rules are different, cultures too. Accept the challenge otherwise you will have no choice but go back to you country.

For Computer professional, MBA and people in Niche skills having sound communication / English skills, to get a job is not very hard here. But for others, specially Engineers of various streams no matter from which country you come Europe, China, South America except USA, you might have to start with lower designation job, or switch the line, or do odd job and then enroll in University, finish courses and then get a job. It might be very hard for you to get a job. It depends on how much you are on top of the latest skills in your line or qualifications that Canada / USA recognize. Latest news says that 1 out of 6 people went back over a period of 20 years, and government is concerned about it.

One big problem here that most of the recruiters and companies will not give you any interview or talk to you, unless you land here and get a SIN card number or at least applied for it. You must have a status of ‘Landed Immigrant’. Only in exceptional cases, I have heard people got jobs before landing here. The percentage of such cases are less than five according to me. This is due to some strict government rule. Don’t compare the way USA recruiters recruit from Asia over phone. It is different here. They want to see the person face to face before selection. They don’t want to take chance for example after recruiting if the person doesn’t arrive, then they land up into solid problems and embarrassment. So start applying just 1 month back before landing here. Recently, I came to know about a famous recruiter who can work for you to get job lined up or even get interview when you are abroad. One Mumbai guy got a good job after working with her. This came in a news paper.

If you don’t have anybody here, and plan to come with family, then you might face nightmare and it will be impossible for you to settle down. Unless you get a job, decent rental accommodation will not be available based on my experience. You might get a basement, but will have to walk a lot and spend lot of time in commuting. Especially in Winter, it is scary.

There is lots of future here. Lot many Baby Boomers are retiring, Canada is trying to make the immigration process smoother, increasing the number of immigrants.
What I suggest, that you should look for newspaper, government statistics to get reasonably true picture instead of listening only to stray incidence. Actually both are required to get a good perspective of the whole situation.

Canada is a beautiful country. Good in sports. Good for people who likes adventure and photography. There are no basic problem of transportation, water, gas, electricity, political disturbance etc. It is a peace loving country with high computerization, high tech culture, and efficient office/bank/postal services similar to USA. Health is free, child care gives some money and there are EI benefits, RRSP retirement, $1000 to all after retirement, RESP and Education grants, free seminar coaching to new immigrants to settle down. Some Universities are comparable or better than many USA colleges, not much competition, lots of labor protection stringent rules to curb exploitation. It is a socialist country. Many newspapers, magazines are free, good mix of capitalism and communism, religious tolerance, people from all possible countries. Transport system is one of the best in the whole world.

People are good, always shows helping hand, and they will mix with you when you come. You can build your society, people around you and go to various communities and enjoy the social ceremonies.

I am liking Toronto now very much and it is slowly growing on me. There are lots of cultural outlet, music, art, fitness, and cuisines. Before landing here, I thought to go back to USA after 3 or 4 years. Now, I am finding it much more interesting due to and lots of variety in life. I might withdraw my thought to go back to USA and plan to stay here permanently.

Thank you all for your comment, Still scouting for and requesting for people to also post their own success story. The idea is to be a candle (floodlight) of encouragement to every immigrant to Canada.

See you at the top

@Guvcode,

I appreciate you also on this your new thread and keep the stories coming in .
This is going to be labelled as the inspirational angle to relocate to canada compared to the sister thread, so there is absolute no need to divert it.

Nice work going.
Cheers ;)
