Citizenship Application Timeline & Current Status (Toronto)
I’ve been waiting 22 months for my Canadian citizenship application, and it’s becoming very discouraging. Despite multiple follow-ups with IRCC, my MP, and even filing an ATIP request, I haven’t received any proper explanation or updates.
My background check and prohibition are still in process.
I’m still waiting for my ATIP results, which I filed 4 months ago — since there’s been no response, I recently had to submit a complaint to the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC).
For context, I’ve been a permanent resident for 5 years and have lived in Canada for 8 years.
Here’s my application history for reference:
    • Jan 23, 2024: We have received your application and have begun processing it.
    • Feb 23, 2024: Citizenship test status updated to In progress.
    • Mar 1, 2024: Scheduled for online citizenship test (Mar 1–30).
    • Mar 4, 2024: Fingerprints required.
    • Mar 19, 2024: Citizenship test status updated to Completed.
    • Apr 7, 2024: Fingerprint information received and under review.
    • Aug 28, 2024: Language skills status updated to Completed.
    • Aug 28, 2024: Physical presence status updated to Completed.
Next step: I’m considering filing a mandamus application, but I’m unsure whether to do it myself or hire a lawyer.

It is frustrating. Just for context, there are many people waiting from 2023, and even 2022. We have heard that applications in security screening (major cause of delay) usually take 24 - 36 months. Before considering mandamus, you may need to know this. We all on the same boat, and it is unfortunate.

If you are not in urgent need, I will highly recommend waiting at least 24-26 months.
Cases less than 24 months could be easily rejected.

I agree with the people above. It sucks to be in this situation and I really believe the lack of transparency isn't helping - though there are some who believe IRCC is really doing their jobs properly....ANYHOW

I also wanna add that the MP office usually couldn't do much especially in the recent couple of years, it seems like IRCC would just tell the MP office the same information as if the applicant or the applicant's representative called. As for the mandamus option, everyone's got their own opinion on it. I think quite a few recent cases have shown mandamus has little effect in pushing the application through, as CSIS is slammed by the requests from IRCC and the court can't really force much beyond that point. And for those who were "successful", there's really no telling if it was mandamus that really helped or their cases were already close to approval. Again, without proper transparency we just wouldn't know.

Stuck in the same place. Applied in 2023 , had online and physical interviews neither had any update. Interviewer also mentioned we have everything and was confused with the situation.
