Effective Monday, January 16, 2012, the visa and immigration section of the Embassy in Damascus was closed until further notice. Applicants for temporary resident visas and student and work permits are directed to submit their application to either the Embassy of Canada in Beirut or the Embassy of Canada in Amman.

The Visa Section of the Canadian Embassy in Damascus has closed for processing. We are not accepting any new applications. Persons who have Temporary Resident applications currently in process in Damascus will have their files processed to a conclusion in Damascus. The active files of persons who have made applications for permanent residence in Canada will be sent to other Canadian Visa Offices in the region for processing. The new processing mission will contact you when your file reaches the assessment stage or, if you have already received a positive selection decision, when other documents or information are required to complete your application.

If you have not yet been contacted by your new processing office, and your mailing address / e-mail address has changed, or you wish to withdraw your application, you should send an e-mail to the Damascus office, which will forward this information to the new processing office. Also, if you have received a request for information or documentation from the Damascus office to which you have not yet responded, you should send that information to Damascus for forwarding to the new processing office. These are the only circumstances in which you should contact Damascus or any other Canadian Visa Office in the region. In all other instances, you should await contact from the new processing office - at which time you can provide them updated information or make queries regarding your application. Correspondence which does not meet these requirements will not be answered.

Processing times may be lengthier given the direction to close the office in Damascus and relocate files to other missions. We thank you for following the requirements indicated above, and for your patience during the application process.

waiting
Dear friends
This waiting is getting sssoooo long and long and sssoooo frustrating and we do not know with this new rules every day and day and too much applicant when our turn would be. :'(
We as old applicants are working on a petition to raise our voice and when we have enough signature send it some places like media or even to the parliament members or minister. There is not any money involved and you don't have to pay anything and we are all doing it by ourselves. Please if you are an old applicant sign it to be more and more people who have objection to this unfairness of Canada to old applicants.
;)

Thanks a lot Hadeel.

It is good that you can have a nick name and not to worry about your name being revealed somewhere. And also you can encourage your friends and family to sign it too. It is only a petition that any body who has an email can sign it, like lots of other petitions. each of us have some close friends and family. Please guys there is no cost for you or anybody. Let's do something after all these years. We have a long way till 1000 signature!!!

By the way you can verify by going to the site from your email after signing and receiving the registration email.

as far as i know the PNP is much faster than the FSW program, i received a similar letter from Alberta 2 years ago & i remember that they requested a job offer to be eligible to apply to their program which was impossible for me :)

hi this is the text of his speech:

OTTAWA - Major changes to the immigration system could include erasing a massive backlog of applications, the minister in charge said Wednesday.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said all options are on the table when it comes to modernizing the process of bringing in would-be immigrants.

"We must have transformational change to move to an immigration program that works for Canada and for newcomers," he said in a speech to the Economic Club of Canada.

He said the changes which will roll out over the course of 2012, will include one to give the provinces the ability to cherry-pick the immigrants they want.

He said Canada also has an eye on New Zealand, where a backlog of immigration applications was legislated away in 2003 and replaced by a pool of prospective applicants.

For now, a pilot program will allow provinces and territories to accept an additional 1,500 immigrants a year if they select them from an existing backlog of skilled worker applications.

"At this point we are looking at all options of dealing with these backlogs and coming up with a faster, more responsive system," Kenney told reporters after the speech.

A parliamentary committee report tabled Tuesday said there is currently a backlog of over a million applications, including as many as 460,000 in the skilled worker category.

Officials told the committee that without changes to the system that backlog won't be eliminated until 2017.

Kenney said the system as it stands is dysfunctional.

"We can’t continue to tell people that they’re going to wait for eight years for a decision on whether they can come to Canada," he said.

He said the government also needs to be more proactive when it comes to communicating with potential applicants about different routes into Canada.

But NDP Immigration critic Don Davies says while it's important to match immigrants with economic needs, there needs to be a more holistic approach to the issue.

"Immigration deals with people, it deals with families and human beings," Davies said.

"It's not just treating people like economic widgets in a machine that we can ruthlessly bring into our country."

And he said the idea of transferring more power to the provinces and in turn to employers, has risks.

"I don't think we want to be delegating the choice of who comes to the country to the private sector," he said.

Kenney said that wouldn't be the point of allowing more matching between jobs and immigrants.

"It's not about privatizing the immigration system, it's about a more active role of recruitment for people so they have jobs when they show up," he said.

"I'd rather have an engineer working as an engineer than a cab driver. That's really where we are trying to go with this."

legistlated means they will make it a law that it is ok to put our files in a pool for employers to pick from, which means no chance for anyone to immigrate because Canadian employers prefer to hire local new imigrants when they wnat cheap labour, it is less complication and cost to them.
