Some Schegen countries allow you to travel with both the old document containing the visa and the new RTD but you should verify the rules with the country you will visit.

You can apply if the expiry is within 6 months. Mine is expiring in Sept, and I'm also in the process of arranging the documents. You should send a letter, in addition to the usual documents, requesting the return of the current RTD because you have a valid visa in it.
Can you please share from which country you got your Schengen visa? And how long did it take to get it?
When renewing a Canadian Refugee Travel Document, do need to submit current/old Refugee Travel Document with the application, or should I keep it until IRCC requests it?

In the application appears you must submit any old document. They belong to government even if you paid for it.
I am not sure about right now but I applied for a renewal in March and received my RTD in 2 weeks
I applied to renew my RTDlast month and got the new RTD in 26 days.
Gave complete documents to the courier at Canada Post Office on June 4th 2026
Documents accepted by Sydney NS office on June 9 2026
Received notification email from IRCC (Travel Document has been approved and will be mailed to you shortly) on June 29 2026
Received RTD in Toronto today after signature (June 30 2026).
I am confused about mailing RTD application to a Sydney NS address. POD PPT-COI, PO Box 8100 Stn A, Sydney, NS B1P 0M2. However, I could see that most folks sent their applicants to ottawa address. Can someone confirm if its the latest change. thanks
Ottawa address is the old one. As of now, in 2026, this is the correct address:

With the PR card, you don't need a visa to enter Mexico, and the allowed stay for some nationalities is actually longer. It also increases your chances of getting a visa approved elsewhere. Without it, there's a higher risk of being denied boarding back to Canada—which happened to me in Mexico because Flair Airlines didn't know that an RTD alone was sufficient.

Have you traveled with your PR and RTD? Did you ever get transferred for secondary screening?
I just got my P1. My friend that's now a citizen, told me he was sent to secondary every time until he got the canadian passport.
