I was in a similar situation. Ideally you should start the process atleast two months before your permit is expiring to give you sufficient time. The employer portal process shoudn't take your employer more than a day to do so it depends on how long they take to actually get it done.
You should apply for LMIA exempt permit - PNP nomination and make sure you get a letter of support for your work permit application from SINP as this has to be uploaded.
Thank you so much for your kind reply. I contacted the SINP, and they told me I should submit an extension through their OASIS portal. Do you know how long the process usually takes? Also, could you advise on the typical documents needed for an LMIA-exempt work permit under a PNP nomination, so I can have everything ready in advance?

Seeing “Background check: Not applicable” after a year of PR processing is definitely scary, but on its own it does not mean there is a problem with your eligibility or that your application is refused. IRCC’s online systems often change the wording of statuses while your file is moving between stages or while an officer is updating things in the background, so it’s common for people to see background check go from “In progress” to “Not applicable” and later back to “In progress” or “Completed,” and many still end up approved. If there were a real issue with your eligibility, IRCC would normally contact you with a request for more documents or a procedural fairness letter explaining their concerns and giving you a chance to respond, not just quietly change that one line. Since your file has been processing for a year, the delay is more likely related to workload, security checks, or internal review timelines rather than a hidden refusal. If you’re very worried, you can send a short, polite IRCC webform message to confirm that your application is still in process and ask if they need anything from you, or you can order GCMS notes to see the internal comments—but the status “Not applicable” by itself is usually just a technical/system update, not a sign that your eligibility has failed.
 
@ Miss Bee, Please kindly help us explain what will happen if the COPR details on IRCC tracker got expired and there was no P1 or PPR instruction from IRCC, and GCMS note shows application is approved before the expiration of COPR date. What will happen to the PR application? will IRCC extend the COPR date or application will be cancelled.

your GCMS notes show that your PR application is approved, but the COPR details and expiry date shown on your IRCC tracker have passed without you ever receiving a P1 (photos/address request for PR card), a PPR, or an eCOPR, your application is not normally cancelled just because that internal COPR validity date expired. That date is usually tied to things like your medical or passport validity and is often set when the officer first finalizes the file. If IRCC didn’t actually issue your COPR or landing instructions in time, they generally need to extend or reissue the COPR rather than refuse your PR. In many recent cases, people see “Final decision: Approved” and COPR information (FD with COPR number) in the tracker, but then wait weeks or months with no portal email or PPR, and the original COPR validity shown in the tracker expires. What typically happens behind the scenes is that IRCC will later reassess validity (especially medicals/security) and then issue a new COPR/eCOPR with a fresh validity date or send new portal/PPR instructions. The process can be very slow, but an expired COPR date in the tracker by itself does not mean your PR is cancelled. From what you have explained here, it means, since MP amd gcms note confirmed our application is already approved, having an expired copr details doesnt automatically canclled our application but rather, ircc extend or reissue another one for a future date?

Yes . For now you should send website with the screenshot and explain them and they would take appropriate action.
 
Hi again @Miss bee ! Is it okay to get P1 email again, even after completing P2 with uploading photos and confirming address? I had one and replied it again (as advised to reply the most recent one) with an additional note as follows:

Please kindly see again the requested information below (that was already sent on 13th November 2025; applicants photographs and address uploaded in the portal on 17th November 2025, after confirming/declaring being in Canada, still in review with IRCC)" and provided the basic information again according to the template been given.

(Rest filled with the template given on the P1 instructions.)

Been waiting for IRCC to confirm (I believe it's just a click away to confirm it as we've given the same address countless times and photos uploaded all within the given instructions so just to confirm and print the cards left) and it's been 2+ weeks since we went through P2. Getting P1 once again was some sort of uplifting

I do not have another job offer lined up yet. Would it affect my PR application if I quit? Thank you and look forward to your response.

- Submitted PR application to IRCC 13 months ago after nomination (received AOR, completed medical up until this point)

- Currently on BOWP and working in MB while awaiting PR

Yes it will. Don't quit until you get PR .

Yes you need to inform both of them and have to submit copy of job letter to PNP office and they will revise your nomination. Your eligibility will be reassessed.

I did it through OINP so my process may have been different but it took 2-3 weeks for me to get the extension letter. For LMIA-exempt work permit you can just start a new work permit application on the GC key portal and answer the questionare until you get to the required documents for LMIA-exempt permit -Provincial Nominees. That will give you an accurate picture on what is required and you can get those documents ready. Typically you will have to upload the offer letter from your employer (new one even if you are employed with the same employer, the new letter will state all the details that the employer would have provided in the employer portal). Your expired nomination certificate, letter of extension, proof you meet job requirements (resume, education credentials, certifications etc). Once you get to the list of required documents after answering the questionaire its pretty straightforward. In the questionare, make sure you select LMIA-exempt permit Provincial Nominees and not LMIA-exempt employer specific (although both sound correct, i found the provincial nominees category gives the correct list of documents).
