Unless part of a pilot program you are looking at multiple years for you and then an additional multiple years for your family

Hello Members,

After I submitting PR after getting the positive decision from my refugee claim, is it possible to apply the visitor visa for my spouse and kid to come Canada while their PR applications (outside Canada) are in the process with mine??? Seeking the valuable advise. Thank you.

They can certainly try applying for a TRV. Chances are very high the TRV will be refused. But no harm trying.

I think you should try and make a good application. When I was a refugee claimant, I applied for my in-laws and my parents, we got there visa. You should at least try.

It appears that they had a good international travel history and source country seems to be India which is not a country with high asylum claims/approvals. TRV approval for extended family is primarily based on the applicants information mot the person’s in Canada. Reason for asylum claim of family member also a huge factor. In your case it appears the claim is only related to your persecution not the whole family.

That’s, true the claim was not related to the family. He had no travel history, but we did show strong ties such as, property and all the family there and my kids ( his grandchildren in canada)I recently got for my mom also, she is from pak living in Dubai. I guess every case is different.

1. Who's eligible:

You’ve already been granted protected person status—either as a refugee recognized by the IRB or via a positive PRRA decision.

PR Application Steps (Inside Canada):

  1. Application Submitted: You’ve already done this.
  2. AOR (Acknowledgement of Receipt) – Usually within 2–3 months of submission.
  3. Background/Security/Medical Checks – May be requested within 3–6 months.
  4. Decision Made: Final PR approval and PR card issued.
Processing Time:

As of 2025, average is 15–20 months for protected persons applying for PR inside Canada.

Check current times: IRCC official processing times

‍‍‍ 2. Family Members Abroad – Permanent Residence Under Family Reunification (One-Year Window Program)

If you included your spouse/children abroad in your protected person claim or notified IRCC within 1 year of your refugee protection, they may qualify under the One-Year Window of Opportunity (OYW) program.

Family PR Process (Outside Canada):

  1. Submit IMM 0008 application for each family member.
  2. Biometrics Request – Usually 1–3 months after AOR.
  3. Medical Exams – IRCC will notify when to complete.
  4. Security/Background Checks – Can take several months.
  5. Final Decision + Visa Issuance (if approved).
Timeline for Family Members Abroad:
  • 12–24 months, depending on:
    • The country they are in (some have longer security processes).
    • Case complexity.
    • Whether documents (IDs, birth certs, etc.) are available.

Can You Expedite or Track Progress?

  • Webform: Use the IRCC Webform to check your case or provide updates.
  • GCKey/IRCC Portal: Track status if you submitted online.
  • Call IRCC (if in Canada): 1-888-242-2100

Did you submit any explanation letter along with your PR application? If yes, what are the topics we need to cover to write in this letter? Thanks.
