I was also unlucky this time.. had some hope when we heard its 30k.. hope next year they will take from the same pool.. at-least then it will be fair.. but if they ask us to submit interest to sponsor again, then it can again reduce our chances :(

I definitely think number of years of stay (legal) for the sponsor should be used to prioritize the applications.. sponsors who are living here for long time should be given chance over the new PR's.. then we can call this a fair chance to everybody.. because in lottery system its purely luck and someone who have applied for the first time gets it and someone who have been waiting for years does not get it..

If a country, a government favored by the people, should have principles for the people, it is necessary to have a reasonable order. The previous methods, albeit flawed, had a somewhat sense of order. We reject this chaotic lottery method. This is a game, our parents are people, not objects to play, hurt our feelings, indefinitely delay or prevent our family reunion! Since the government wants to give some people a chance to play the lottery, why not give other people other options, for those who don't want to play this game? For example, waiting in line, or paying more to reduce the burden on the government, why not?

We refuse to play games, refuse to play with our parents who are older year by year...
Our parents have been in the lottery for 7 years! We really don’t understand why this lousy lottery is playing the destiny of our family! Time after time, loss and emotional hurt, why is it so difficult for our family to reunite? Isn't 7 years enough? This is not fair!

If the government sincerely cares about each of our families, please stop playing games! Please take the future of each family seriously. This is also our country’s reputation! Freedom, fairness and reasonableness, giving us a correct way and more choices, it isn't to force every family to participate in this gambling game and let a stupid game decide our lives! Where are our freedoms, our rights? We refuse to play, this is our life and family....because a country and it's government should be responsible and do what's right for it's people, rather than gamble with family's lives, with lottery games that determine the outcome!

Who of you are in the same boat and feel the same way we do? We need to get together and let the government hear our family voice, if they really care about family!
I agree, I feel very sad for the persons who did not get an invite, My son and I tried for the first time in 2020- for my mom-My son got the invite this time-I totally understand the feeling as I was very dissappointed last year. I was so anxious coming into this draw. Totally devastating to sit waiting to see if???not nice

One of the reasons why the government switched to the lottery system from FIFO (first in, first out) was because people were screaming that the FIFO process was so unfair and a complete disaster. In fact, there was a huge petition started by people on this very forum specifically asking to switch to a lottery system and that petition was sent to the government. So technically the government / IRCC did in fact listen to the public when they introduced the lottery. Many people on this forum wanted this and asked for it.

The parent / grandparent sponsorship process that existed previously (where there was no cap on applications and people just waited in queue) had a 10+ year processing time. People thought this was a disaster too. It took far too long to bring parents here. Many parents tragically passed away before their applications were ever processed or developed medical conditions which then made them inadmissible. People created huge petitions to change that too and hence the cap was introduced.

I don't know what the right answer is. Unfortunately parent sponsorship isn't a right. However that doesn't mean you shouldn't lobby your MP for what you think is the best possible solution.
I agree with you Scylla.. i used to hate first in first serve (still hate it, I travelled to YYZ in a cold Jan morning to make sure my package does not spent extra time on transit) .. it was not fair to those who do not live in a big city, where fedex/dhl wait some hours/days to collect enough packages (but I was lucky YYZ was few hrs drive) .. when lottery system was introduced my thought was it gives some kind of fairness… i think there is no system that is fair to everyone, any system will discriminate and favor some group than other based on income, yrs lives in Canada, location, e.t.c.
Also we have to understand that it is not government’s interest (any parties’ govt, liberal, conservative, NDP, Green, Bloc, PPC) to make us all happy (though its their responsibility).. For any party, number of voters who wish to sponsor their parents and grandparent are not that much compare to the number who have no interest in this program (In fact most of them have -ve preception). I think right thing to do as a sons and daughters is to make a backup plan (though this is not always possible to everyone).. anyway to sons and daughters, like me and my partner, best of luck for the next time.

Even if the program can be disbanded tomorrow, there's still an ability to put forward a legal challenge.

This has been done in the past with certainly economic immigration programs (e.g. when FSW applications were canceled in bulk).

Generally speaking, the outcomes of these legal challenges haven't been very favourable (apart from the one which was settled via an NDA for parent sponsorship). But people can certainly try.

Just curious what the legal challenge actually is for this year.

You are taking me back with that story. It was a complete sh*t show and unfair to many as you've said.

I remember the detailed threads of people watching to see which couriers were in the line first when the doors opened to accept applications and which ones hadn't even arrived at the IRCC offices yet. That was one big mess. And some people spent an obnoxious amount of money on couriers / airfare / etc. only to have their applications fail to make the cap.

I actually think the lottery system could be made to work. I just don't think IRCC has implemented it in the right way.

Anyway - I wish everyone luck. Crappy situation. Even more so with COVID and travel being so much more difficult.

That's a fair question. I'm sure a lawyer who is being paid can come up with something. :)

I still remember that time. We were ready to plan a trip to submit the application physically ourselves but it was changed soon after.
We want to wait till we were financially more stable and when my MIL is willing to come join us (she visited once before and was OK with moving).
We did get picked in 2018 round 2 lottery at the end.

I would suggest the owner of the google doc to remove the email addresses. And instead replaced with a nickname/username. They need a better system to store/link the name with the email so notification can be sent out. But not posting in a public google doc.....

Totally agree. They just play a game. They don’t respect their citizens.
