Sharing what I did and if situation is same for you then it may work out. I am working as a consultant on contract for a US firm which is basically a sole proprietor. I didn't register the company and hence there wasn't need of GST/HST number.

To get your GST/HST number, follow these steps:

  1. Call CRA Again: Clearly explain you’re a new resident and haven’t filed taxes in Canada yet. Request a workaround.
  2. Visit a CRA Office: Go in person with your documents (proof of residency, SIN) and explain your situation.
  3. Submit Form RC1: Download and fill out Form RC1, "Request for a Business Number (BN)" from the CRA website and mail it to the address on the form.
  4. Seek Professional Help: Consult an accountant or tax professional who specializes in helping new immigrants.
  5. Check Community Resources: Contact local newcomer services or business development centers in Ontario for guidance.
These steps should help you obtain your GST/HST number.
