Applying for SIN online after landing

Currently all Service Canada centres are closed due to the COVID-19 situation. However i do see that there is an option to apply for SIN online. Has anyone done this before? would like to know the experience.

Also, should we apply for SIN before COPR expiry even though we land before COPR expiry? I ask this because if online application is not an option, we would have to plan to land atleast 15 days in advance because of the current quarantine requirements.

Someone mentioned that they have applied online and it's been more than 18 days since they haven't heard anything.

I applied online today, but given the delays in almost all government procedures (landed on 16th of March and haven't received my PR yet) I suspect it will take time as well.

As for the application itself, they asked for proof of residency (COPR), proof of identity (passport) and proof of address (bank statement with printed address). They didn't ask for an email or any EE related application numbers. They did ask for my phone. I am not sure if they will communicate the SIN through phone or by mail.

Thanks much for the detailed response. Curious - how did you get a bank account without SIN ?

I didn’t need a sin to open the bank account. They told me whenever I get the SIN I can contact them to update the info. As far as I understand, it’s not necessary to have a SIN and most banks will open an account for you without one.

Unrelated to this thread, may I ask if it was easy to open a bank account? I am planning to land and stay in an AirBnB. I was going to give my friends address for the PR. I was thinking maybe I can do the same for the bank account? Get a letter as proof of residence and then apply for SIN. Thoughts?

Yes, opening the bank account was fairly straightforward (I opened one with TD following a friend's recommendation). I put my Airbnb address when opening the bank account and I ended up receiving some mail and my credit card there (I didn't know you could request a pick-up from the branch). Looking back, I should have used my friend's address as well, it's probably better (I've put my friend's address for my PR address).

It appears that the SIN gets delivered by mail after the online application so it's safer to use your friend's address in this case.

Good luck to you!

Hi guys, I am a bit confused the instructions say that we need 2 different proof of ID (1 primary and 1 secondary) + 1 proof of address. However, in our case (individuals that landed with a COPR letter and are waiting to receive their PR card); the valid primary proof of ID would be "both" the COPR letter and our foreign passport. Am I wrong to understand that in that case the secondary proof of ID will need to be something else (ie it cannot be our foreign passport anymore). On the guideline they suggest a provincial driving license for instance.

I just want to know if I am overthinking this ...I am holding on sending my application online feeling I do not yet have enough documents. As I read the instructions only the COPR letter + passport + proof of address is not enough.

Also they do ask for a phone number (they don't seem to accept international phone number either ...I am on the fence ...shall I give a friend number or wait to manage to get a Canadian number once my quarantine finally ends...)

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

Nice thanks for sharing - Wich nationality are you ? So you used your foreign country ID card as secondary proof of ID? is your driver's permit from Canada? Did you use your driver's permit as proof of Canadian address then?

I am from Trinidad and Tobago and I used my foreign country's ID and DP. My proof of address was my bank statement.
