Hi, I recently got accepted into a cosmetology school in B.C. and my study permit and simultaneous work permit have both been approved.

My school program starts in June 2019, and I currently live outside of Canada and all I currently have is my correspondence letter and permit approval letters, NOT the actual study + work permits.

So here's my question: in February 2019, I am planning to visit B.C. from outside of Canada to visit my new school for a tour and stay for 4 days before flying back home. The next time I will enter Canada will be a couple weeks before I start my actual program.

Will I be receiving my permits in my passport during this entry (Feb 2019) even if I am flying out of Canada again without starting my actual program?

Will there be any issue with me visiting Canada temporarily prior to starting my school program? (issues with my visa/ permit status?)

If anybody can help me with explaining my situation I would appreciate it!

1) By work permit do you mean your off-campus work permit or Co-op work permit?

2) & 3) You will not be issued the permits unless you have the finances and are willing to stay from February 2019 to June 2019. It is possible to travel months in advance of your course but you will need to satisfy the visa officers demands for financial proof. I don't think they would allow that

Most people who do go months early go with the plan of staying there with relatives. It would be better for you to contact the CIC as this is a very unique case, as I said most people do not leave after arriving.

What I can say is that if you show the financial proof that you can sustain your stay from the date you enter to the date of the start of your studies. Then you can leave anytime you want after receiving the study permit.

Please note you cannot work until the start of your studies regardless of what it says on your TRV.

I mean my Coop permit.
I do not plan to stay in Canada from Feb to June. Also, there's not really a need for my permits to be issued in Feb; I just wanted to visit for a tour. I don't mind getting them issued when I arrive in Canada again right before my program starts.

Is there any problem with me visiting Canada in Feb, then, with an eTA as a tourist, basically?

Thanks!

What do you have, do you have a eTA or a TRV ? , most people on the forum need a TRV since they need a visa to visit Canada. Those who don't need a visa just need to get a eTA. If you are in a country with an eTA, you can just visit Canada with the eTA as a normal tourist.

Thank you so much for the clarification! I have a Japanese citizenship so I believe I'm exempt.

Also, when I actually arrive in Canada in June to have my permits issued, I have to prove my financial security to get the permits? How do I prove this? Do I need a Canadian bank account already open and how much $ should I have in it?

Yes you are exempt. You don't need a Canadian bank account. When you applied for the permit you would have been asked for financial proofs ? Those are enough for you for June.

For your current trip you will need financial proof for the 4 days that you are visiting as well as some sort of accommodation. It would be ideal to book a hotel or airbnb.

I just have one question. In your eTA is anything like for study purpose or something there , if so you may not be able to use this eTA for travelling.

I would also ask that you contact CIC before travelling as I am not 100% sure and there is no information available.

They will be able to tell you if you can make the trip on your eTA that you received with the permit or not.

The eTA I have now if from 3 years ago when I used it for tourism/ traveling purposes and it is still active until 2020. Should be okay to use this in Feb 2019 for traveling also regardless of whatever other permit approvals I have for the future?

Thanks again for your help

Yes, in that case, it should be ok for you to travel. Do ensure to show your finances for the 4-day visit as the border agency can still turn you back, although since you have gone there before it should not be an issue.

From what I read you will get a new eTA when you apply for the study permit. The eTA number should be mentioned in your Visa letter. It could be possible they will issue you a fresh eTA. You can also extend it once you enter Canada in June if they don't give you one.

So from what you said you should not have any issues.
