Hi Vijay,
Thank you for the detailed reply. I have few more questions if you don't mind me asking:

1. Do they charge high insurance amount for American imported vehicles?
2. Also, what are the few good insurance companies in Ontario?
3. Does the Front wheel drive vehicles like Accord worth it for Ontario weather. Its just 2 yrs old and 15k miles on it.
1. there is no car based insurance as of i know , location based here , Brampton and missisaugua - very high , min 350 + per month due to worst driving of others in the area. may be premium car it should be high

2. which ever insurance gives lower number , i have Td insurance, try Desjardins also try TD .

3. would say for the miles driven , bring here and have for some years and keep as second one , yeah snow tires as suggested above should work.

Thanks for the information, it is very much helpful. I have a question, i just cleared my loan on the car but have just 2 months to move to Canada. The DMV policy says 60 - 90 days to get the title updated by removing the lien holder, this would be a close call but I do have a letter from the Lien holder that the loan has been all paid off. Can I use the old title and the letter from Lien confirming the payment to be used for exporting.

Yes, in Michigan the SOS even suggest to use an old Title and official Lien Release letter rather than pay extra for the new Title.

Hey All. For registering car do I need utility bill to show proof of residence or is lease enough.
Where did you get requirement that you would need to bring utility bill or lease at all?
Driver’s licence and proof of insurance show your address...

My insurance (www.cooperators.ca) agent accepted report from Michigan SOS, showing that my spouse first DL was issued in 2002, which was 16 years experience (in USA), so premium went from $2,500 a year to $1,900 a year.

Still 1900 CAD is a lot. I was not paying that much even as a brand new driver in the US. But anyway you can’t get everything. Canada seems more stable place to live.

@KBH, I am right now at step 12 having got my RIV inspection done. I am wondering how much fees I need to pay at Service Ontario for registration/tags as a percentage?

I'm assuming you have completed safety inspection as that is required for registration. I had to pay approx CAD 220 for registration (sticker, plates, etc).

Thank you. That's exactly what I paid in Service Ontario.

Hey can i ask a few question
1. what is the bill of sale? Is this behind the title?
2. How did u work the car insurance out? (U drove from us to canada right? So while u were on the road driving to Canada, u had your us insurance right? And u cancel it after you have canadian insurance or what to do?)
3. So the cost to import a vehicle should be total of less than 400 usd dollars right?
Thank you so much

Responses to your questions below from what I have experienced during my move are below.
1. Bill of Sale was given when I bought my car from the dealer many years back. My experience was they did not ask me that document at any point. It is better to take if you have it.
2. I had my US insurance for the car till I got my Canadian insurance. I had to first exchange my Canadian license and use that along with US insurance experience letters to get good rate on Canadian insurance.
3. It was around 625 CAD. 350 RIV fee+105(some AC fee at the border)+220(Ontario registration+ license plates).

I hope this answers your questions.
