Did anyone register their marriage after getting married in India?

would it be wise to register both in India and Canada and obtain marriage certificate from both countries ?

Are you sure? because we have marriage certificate from India and we did enquiry in canada and they said they can register our marriage but we need to surrender our Indian marriage certificate.

Yes I'm sure. You use your Indian marriage certificate for sponsorship purposes. As long as the marriage abroad was legally done there, then you are legally married here.

Totally unnecessary and will have no effect whatsoever on the speed of the processing of your PR application.

In general there is no such thing as "registering a marriage" in Canada. A legal marriage performed anywhere in the world is also recognized in Canada, with just the marriage certificate (translated to english/french if required).

The only thing one must do in Canada with the government after getting married in another country, is to change status with CRA to married. You can also inform any other place that may want to know (i.e. for joint bank accounts, insurance, listing as beneficiaries, etc). In all cases a translated copy of marriage certificate is all that's needed if asked for proof.
