Hello,

My open work permit is approaching its expiry date, and I need to renew it.

Initially, when I was a refugee claimant, I applied for an open work permit along with my refugee claim and was issued a work permit valid for two years.

After I was granted protected person status and received a Refugee Travel Document, I applied to renew my work permit. At that time, I submitted the Refugee Travel Document as part of my application, and I was issued a one-year open work permit, which matched the validity period of the travel document.

My question is: can I apply for a new open work permit using only a guarantor-signed photocopy of my original passport (from my previous citizenship)? The original passport is currently in possession of IRCC, as indicated in the Notice of Seizure, which I have on hand and can submit if requested. I don't want to renew refugee travel document by spending money and receive 2 years validity and then renew my open work permit.

Any clarity will be much appreciated. Thanks!!

You do not need a guarantor-signed photocopy of your original passport. You can use a scanned/photocopy of your seized passport.

Yes.
When you complete the imm5710e form, select the submission date in the expiry date. ( i.e. if you are submitting today, select today's date in expiry).

Okay great!

One more question, last time I had submitted my refugee travel document and they gave me 1 year validity open work permit (I think bvoz the refugee travel document was due to expire in 1 year period).

Now with citizenship passport that is already expired, what validity duration open work permit would they give me u think?

Can I give a letter of explanation and ask for 2 years work permit?

I do not think you can ask for anything from IRCC.

In December 2023, when I renewed my WP first time, I got 2 years' validity. At that time in this forum, I read few people received their 1-year validity.

I am not sure about applying WP with a refugee travel document since I have not heard about it.

May someone expert answer your question in this forum.

I applied for renewal/extension of my work permit. After 2 days I received a message from IRCC that my work permit has been extended for 1 year initially, pending the issue of the new work permit. This is a temporary extension so that one can continue to work pending the issue of the new work permit. I read that the processing time for extending the work permit is now around 180 days. From what I read in this forum, the work permit will be extended/issued for 2 years.

I don't know whether the work permit has to do with the travel document or the original passport from home country but logically, the work permit (issued for refugee claimants and protected persons) has nothing to do with any travel document/original passport.

Are u a refugee claimant or a protected person? If so what document did U submit as proof of citizenship in your work permit renewal application?
