Regular mail, could be ordinary or registered.
Very old fashioned system though.

It arrived by email only 10 days after the medical results had been received by VO. Thus we were extremely surprised

i applied in may 2006, I check my application status today following is my application status.

any thoughts on my application

We started processing your application on May 30, 2006.
We transferred your application to the London England office on September 29, 2010. The London England office may contact you.

I have the same status, also after the below status I received a letter to wait for 6 to 12 months without contacting VO for 12 months.
"Your application was reviewed and we started processing on April 25, 2012"

Can you kindly explain What does this mean "Background checks are in progress" and "what kind of verifications are it is ?
