You need a prescription from a doctor to purchase this medication in Canada. It is not available over the counter. Once you have a prescription - just go to any pharmacy near you.

Provided you really need the medication - no, it shouldn't be hard. In fact the doctor who treated you for the broken leg should have given you a prescription (not necessarily for that specific pain medicatio - but for some kind of pain medication).

Having said that, a doctor won't just give you a prescription just because you ask for it. You have to show that you need it and the doctor has to agree that you need it. Doctors are responsible for preventing prescription medication abuse and addictions - this is especially true when it comes to pain relief medication and certain other medications that are widely abused.

Keep in mind that the doctor won't necessarily give you a prescription for the exact medication you're asking for. You need pain medication in general - you don't need tramadol specifically. Needing / wanting a specific pain medication is generally a sign of an addiction rather than a real need.

In the pharmacy, is the pharmacist will get the prescription once we buy a medicine, or they will give it back to me? Coz If they will get that prescription we will always go to the doctor if they will get that everytime we will refill our bottle?

Sorry - it's difficult to understand what you are asking.

The doctor will write the prescription and you will take it to the pharmacy. Once you give the prescription to the pharmacists - you will not get it back (you can't use the same prescription over an over again). The pharmacist will then give you whatever medication is in the prescription. If it's pain medication, the prescription will likely be for one round of pain medication (e.g. enough medication for a couple of weeks). The prescription certainly won't allow you to keep getting this medication over any over again. You would need to go to the doctor and get a new prescription each time you want more of that medication.

Perhaps the doctor dispense the medicine (without a pharmacist) to a patient in the OP's country. However, in Canada, things work in other way as "scylla" had explained. However, some pharmacist allow the patient to use the same prescription over an over again. The pharmacist would make sure if you do not have allergies with that medicine before he/she dispense it to you.

I'm sure that's the case. Heck - the last time I was in Bali I purchases stuff there with no doctor involvement that's prescription only in Canada. I know that's possible in many corners of the world. I just wasn't 100% sure what the OP was really asking - and wasn't sure my answer would address his/her questions fully.

OP = Original poster, that's you.

They are contemplating if the system is different in your country.

In Canada, you go to the GP, state your problem and they may give you samples of advil or similar that they have on hand or they may write you a prescription for something stronger. You take the prescription to the pharmacy and get the medication. The pharmacist keeps the prescription. If you want more, you have to go back to the GP.

Because many people are hooked on pain medication, some doctors don't really like prescribing them, especially in large quantities.

If you are in AB on a work permit, you should have an Alberta health card so you don't have to pay to see a GP. You have to pay for the medication though.

It shouldn't cost you anything.
