Visitor - Work Permit (COVID19)

Hi there,

My father in law is currently visiting with us from India. He arrived in January and was supposed to leave April 12th, but due to lock down in India and no international flights allowed, he has been here ever since (all flights cancelled). His visa is in good standing and not expired.

Is there any way he can apply for a work permit or anything? He would like to stay here until travel is considered "safe" (no high exposure in airports etc) but still needs to have funds to support himself and his family

Please advise if there is any option for him in this regard - thank you!

He would need to get a job offer from an employer in Canada and that employer would need to obtain an approved LMIA. Once your father in law has the job offer and approved LMIA from the employer, he can then apply for a closed work permit tied to that specific employer.

It generally takes an employer 4-6 months to complete the LMIA process. As a first step, the employer has to advertise the job for a month to prove no Canadian could be found for the job.
