Visit Visa extension

A client came here on a visit visa. He submitted a paper application for a visitor record extension to the correct office Edmonton. Since it was a paper application he didn't receive a response back in the mail. How can we find out what the status was on the application and if got approved or rejected. It was a paper application so there is not any specific application #. Would we be able to get an update from his UCI #? Is there somewhere we can call and ask or perhaps email? What's the response times if its an email. His presumed 6 months would be running out soon. So we want to to know we need to apply for restoration or a new visitor record. Thanks
