3. pay at least 1 application fee before going back up to canada. make sure to carry that receipt and everything you have for your pr application with you when you cross (print out a copy and bring your proofs to show your progress). this will show them you have intentions for applying for PR and know the rules. don't worry about it being perfect or filled out properly/completely. once they see that big stack of papers, they'll know you know what you're suppose to do.

Thank you so much for this advice!

Just want to clarify - can you pay the application fees at anytime? Do you actually think printing out our in-progress PR forms would help?

Also, in regards to ties to the US would a return ticket to Boston and significant US investments help?

yes you can pay the fees at any time, and they can be paid separately. you just need to make sure all receipts are in your package.
yes, in my experience it definitely helped. i always carried a copy of my application before and after it was submitted. one look at the thick envelop and they knew i was serious. they never actually went through the papers. (though i did take them out once, and the receipt was on top, so they would have seen that)

yes for the return ticket, though it will depend on the officer and how he feels about your husband's answers to other questions since tickets can be cancelled. if he sticks to a story saying i'm visiting my wife until xx date, here is my return ticket, then more than likely that will not cause any concern. keep in mind a) make sure the ticket isn't for too far out and it looks like a legitimate amount of time a person would come to visit. and b)they have the ability to limit his stay until that date. if they do that, he will have to apply to extend his stay as a visitor.

not really for the investments - in my experience, they ONLY cared about living and working situations. they didn't care about bank accounts or posessions because a) a person can leave that behind and go anywhere, and b)you can still access the money when you get into canada. also, plenty of foreign living people have us investments, so that doesn't necessarily prove a "tie" to the us.

I keep seeing people say they sent their app's in via Canada Post or Purolator. If we are applying Outland, I can mail it USPS, right?

Yes, once in Canada USPS turns into Canada Post. Just be sure to mail it a step up from First Class as you want a tracking number. Priority Mail International is what you want I think.

Planning for May 14
So the shock is starting to wear off from the DM yesterday. Trying to get everything together and I'm starting to feel overwhelmingly unprepared for the next steps.

About how long after DM have you guys been seeing the line about them mailing out the COPR? Has anyone received a COPR prior to actually receiving the line stating that they've sent out correspondence?

DM Feb 29th, ecas updated March 11th that they sent us a letter. No sign of it yet. We're in PEI though, mail seems to take over two weeks to get here from CIC

Oh jees. That'd be a lot to take in :( I'm sorry about your mom. Take your time to grieve, if you don't have a chance during the landing phase make sure you take the time in the near future.

Congrats on COPR

For me I noticed the DM update on 03-14-16 and today I received my COPR in the mail. My ecas has not updated with anything stating they mailed out my COPR.

How far are you from Ottawa? Where did they have to mail it to?

I am not far from Toronto. I think Ottawa is maybe a 6 hour drive. It was mailed to me here in Brantford, Ontario.

Here is the thing though.
My COPR was issued on 3-11-16, mailed on 3-15-16. I received on 3-18-16. I am not sure when they updated my ecas, I just noticed the DM on 3-14-16. Not sure if that helps you at all.

Try not to worry, it will happen when you don't expect it.

It would definitely come quicker within Canada, though. Husband's COPR is being mailed to NYS. Not far geographically from Ottawa, but still over the border.
