Another question here folks!

I had a name change and had to send for another passport (Back to the US) does anyone know how long it takes the mail service. Obviously there is customs to clear, just asking because US passport services cannot provide me a tracking number because it is going to another country...

Mail on the average takes about 6-8 days from US to Canada ( at least from VT to Quebec). However, I'm not sure about longer distances.

In my experience, rural Pennsylvania to Gatineau, Quebec, takes as much as 10 days quite often.

I can't speak for BC, but this is true in Ontario. I've had my driver's licence here since Sept 2014 and I only just now sent in my PR application.

Did you just turn in your states drivers license and get your Ontario one?. I am in Ontario but I have a car insured in NYC. I really don't think I can do anything until I have my PR. I can't import my car to Ontario I'd have to pay taxes. Did you import a car too?

No, I have not yet imported my car. It is still registered and insured in Arkansas. I was rear-ended here shortly after receiving my ON licence and my insurance company found out I was in Canada, but I just explained to her that I am here visiting for now and can't import the car and get Canadian insurance until I get my residency. They let me keep it for now. As for the registration, I prepaid for 3 years a couple of years ago, so they just automatically mail my new stickers to my ex-husband's address in Arkansas and I pick them up there when I visit or he will mail them to me.

And the ontario government is okay with giving you a D.L? Are you visitor visa or visit record?

They didn't ask for my visa/immigration status at all. I just use my Nexus card to go in and out of Canada. I don't have a visa or a visitor record.

in ontario, anyone can transfer a license, regardless of whether they are a visor, pr, student, worker or citizen. they don't ask about status, nor do they as for proof of residency. all they care about is your driving history from where you are currently licensed.

Could you elaborate as to what you mean by "transfer a license"? Do they take your current DL in place of the ontario DL or you can possess both DL's (one from Ontario and another from U.S)?

they took my us license. it's like when you transfer license's between states, you can't hold (or aren't suppose to hold) 2 licenses from different states at the same time. you are basically taking your experience as a us driver and using it to obtain a canadian license.

Yikes, that's the way it sounded from your post, but I wanted to double check - Thank you. I will wait until I move to Canada to transfer my DL.

Hi all - new here as my wife and I are going to be filing our application in a couple of weeks. I first want to thank everyone who takes the time to answer questions - I've learned a wealth of information by browsing through this and other topics.

I'm in the U.S, she will be sponsoring me to come to Canada. We've been married since September, but have been in a relationship for many years and can easily leap the proof barrier there. Otherwise we will be filing everything except a current FBI report - I had one done but by the time the medical results came through, the clearance had expired, so I'm playing the waiting game. I am going to send the expired one anyway since it will show a clean record and will only be a couple of months out of date. That's one example of what I learned - based on the current wait time and timing of potential spousal approval, the timing will be OK for the new FBI report and hopefully won't delay things too much.

Our biggest concern is her income - she is 63 and not working - she previously had owned her own business, but that was many years ago and hasn't had a need to work for various reasons for quite some time. She owns her house outright, so there are no mortgage payments and her children help pay bills, such as utilities, taxes on the property, etc. She did show some income last year (a very long and messy story) but it's only around $21,000 that shows on her most recent Option C and is on a fixed income. We are wondering if that will fly with CIC. I believe her son is willing to give a statement saying he is paying certain bills, but (again, long story) he's not going to be open to having his financials looked at. She is also going to have an appraisal done this week on the house at the advice of an attorney - should be worth upwards of $300,000-$500,000. I'm 55, willing to work and have solid experience.

Does anyone have any opinions on whether we'll be OK or suggestions on what to provide to give us a better chance? Thanks in advance!
