Hi Guys,

I am planning to land in Canada on 25th April and come back to India by 15th May after completing my landing formalities. My question is that in those three weeks of my stay in Canada if I do not get my PR card mailed to me, can I travel back to India without my PR card and have the cards mailed to me by one of my friends to me in India for any future travels ?

Please help !!

Thank you !!

Hi ,
Its not recommended , try to make your initial visit for atleast 10 week so you can get PR card .
I heard it do take 3 to 8 week to receive PR card

I am in a situation where I cannot stay for more than 3 weeks. Is my physical presence required in Canada at the time of the issuance? If not, can the cards be mailed to me by a friend or relative in Canada.

Also when I travel back to Canada, do I need to carry my PR card with me and is it required to be produced at the port of entry ?

No - your physical presence is not required in Canada at the time of issuance.

Yes - a friend or relative can mail you the card.

Yes - you must have your PR card with you when you travel back to Canada. It will be required by the airline to let you board the plane and will also be required at the port of entry.

Thanks Scylla, in the worst case scenario I think this should be a good option:

Yes - that's correct. If for some reason you don't have your PR card by the time you want to travel back to Canada, you'll need to apply for a Travel Document. (You must have either the PR card or the travel document to board a plane and re-enter Canada.)

All the best ,
Though this option is for people who lost or misplaced there PR card , not for people who left Ca after staying a week , Ca visa officer do advice for initial trip for min 6-8 weeks.
I mean what you will explain them - that you go to Ca for a week just to validate your PR and didnt wait for your PR card , i stuggest you to make bit longer trip as visa officer dont like people playing with rules unnecessary .
Friend , do check with people who faced those situation that how much it took them to sort out .

I do have the option of leaving my wife and daughter in Canada, till we get our PR cards. They can come back later once the PR cards are received. Do you think it will be a good idea...

Not true. The BSA at the port of entries - Airports or boarder - are not bothered when you are leaving Canada after you land. When your landing documentation is completed at the POE, you will get the PR card automatically within the required time frame by post. If any landed immigrant wish to leave Canada immediately after his/her landing, there is no problem. No one will stop and restriction is established. The problem is only for re-entering. It should be with a PR card or with a PRTD ( explained on the link:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/travel.asp ) A landed immigrant can wait for the PR card or can arrange some one to mail the PR card ( already mentioned by Scylla ).

Hi Simsinghgill,
You can go to Canada do the landing formalities and come back in a weeks time. There is no problem in that. Your Pr cards will be mailed to your friend or relatives address you have provided. Your physical presence is not required.
If by any chance your Pr cards are not issued due to photo problems then too no problems as the rules have changed.
From 3rd Nov 2011 the person is not called to their office to redo the photos. Previously they would call the person in office to get the photos.
So here too if your photo is rejected your relative will be mailed a red letter giving a time limit of 180 days to provide the photos.
If you happen to get this just forward a set of new photos to your relative to mail it to CIC.
Here too if your photos get rejected you will be issued a final notice to submit in 30 days fresh photos. Here too your relatives should be given the photos to mail it from Canada.
Here too if you fail your file will be closed. This does not mean you lose your PR status.
You can then contact consulate in your home country and get a travel document to fly to Canada and pay $50 for applying again for a PR card which could take 6 months minimum to get in your hands.
Hope this detailed explanation has given you a insight how it works.

If You Recently Arrived in Canada

If you gave Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) an address in Canada, but you left before the card was mailed to you, you can ask your family or friends who live at that address to send you the PR card. You can then re-enter Canada with your PR Card. However, if you do this, you are taking a risk.
If you have arrived and have not yet given CIC a mailing address, and you left Canada, you should apply for a Travel Document (Permanent Resident Abroad) before you try to re-enter Canada. This application must be submitted to a Canadian visa office abroad.
This Travel Document can only be used once. You are not guaranteed to get the Travel Document, if you apply. It is up to the officer at the visa office to decide if you will get it or not.

Thank you very much for the responses guys, really appreciated, your replies explain a lot of things. @Aquib, I guess the problem arises only if an address is not provided to mail the PR cards. If an address is given then I think it should not be a problem. And as said earlier I do have the option of leaving my wife and daughter in Canada for a couple of more weeks till they get the PR card.
