Submitting original documents

In most cases, other than the actual forms and the Option C printout, copies or certified copies are sufficient. However, in the section where they want "Proof of relationship to sponsor", they indicate to send originals.

Most of the stuff is online these days (boarding passes, tickets, hotel confirmations, etc) and I'm not too worried about that. Even these days digital photos can be printed off with captions etc. - and these can all be re-printed should the need arise.

However, I'm a bit concerned about sending wedding cards, guestbooks - these things are important keepsakes for me...

So I'm just wondering...has anyone had any issues with having these things returned?

We photo copied everything that wasn't meant to be an original and sent the copies, like our wedding cards.

Supplemental form IMM3911 for spouses outside Canada states to send originals...which doesn't make much sense to me either...anyone else with experience?

Anything that is important to you and can not take a chance of it not being returned, just send photo copies of those items. The VO may or may not return what is sent. We lucked out our VO returned all of the loose photographs and lot of our personal documentation. But we were willing and prepared for the possibility of the originals not being returned.

If it states send orginnals, you have to send orginals; they will ask if you to send orginals. So lets say if you sent them photocopy and they asked for orginals. They wont accept that. Follow the checklist. They do return orginal documents. If they don't need orginal send them photocopy

We also photocopied a load of engagement and wedding cards and just sent the photocopies. Pretty much everything else we sent as original.

We sent copies on things that were personal and important to us, such as all the letters we exchanged. (We copied not just the letters, but the envelopes with the postmarks.)

We did write in our cover letter, though, that we are able and willing to send the originals of all these copies if requested.

They did not make a request for the originals, and the copies all came back.


Oh, one thing - we DID send the original letters from our family and friends writing testaments to our genuine relationship.

We sent originals of all our cards, letters, etc. I kept photocopies of all the originals for myself. We had everything that was original returned to us, photos, cards etc.

The checklist for Abu Dhabi says: Provide originals: they will be returned to you once your application has been finalized. for that section of the application, "Proof of relationship to sponsor".

If the checklist tells you to send originals, I imagine that not doing so would result in delays or potential refusals. They say they will return them, since it's requested of all applicants.

I believe the originals are more for "official" documentation (bank statements, certificates of marriage, lease agreements (I sent a copy as I for this however as mine said only originals where indicated and I wasn't going to send the lease agreement to the government who has been known to lose things often), etc)
