Hello fellow forum members,

I used to be an international student and I became a permanent resident recently.

1. Is it possible for me to sponsor my brother who is 20 years old and is currently an international student to become a permanent resident? If so, how long does the sponsorship application take?

2. What about parental sponsorship? Can I sponsor my father to come in to Canada as a permanent resident provided that I can sustain them financially?

Thanks for your help in advance!

1. No, you cannot sponsor your brother.
2. Yes, you can sponsor your father, but you have to exceed the minimum income requirements for three consecutive years, then you can submit your application to sponsor your father, and it will be a randomly draw lottery system, which will not guarantee you father will be picked. When you are eligible to sponsor your father, your brother's age should be over the dependent age limit (currently 22 yr old) to include in your father's application, means your brother need to find another way to immigrate to Canada by himself.

1. You can only sponsor your brother as a dependent in your parent's sponsorship application. To qualify to be included as a dependent, the application to sponsor your parents and brother must reach CIC before he turns 22.

2. Yes - provided you have earned sufficient income in Canada for three years in a row. Parent sponsorship is available on a lottery basis. If you meet the income requirements, you'll need to enter the 2018 lottery and hope you are selected.
