Flagpoling is a term used to describe the process of leaving Canada, traveling to a U.S. land border crossing or airport, and then immediately re-entering Canada for the purpose of obtaining a new immigration status or document, such as a work permit or study permit or to complete the PR process.
Temporary Resident Visa holders usually apply online or by paper but through this process, it can take weeks or months to obtain an answer. Often clients don't have this amount of time and if they go to a border they may be processed immediately.
The term “flagpoling” comes from the flagpole located at the border crossing where people turn around to re-enter Canada.
