Hi there,

Depends. Normally one time visa expires at the end of medical/police clearance whichever is later. Although the this is common, it is not always the case.

You could expect atleast one months time before your immigrant visa expires.

Did you get passport request yet?

Depending on when you get your passport returned some offices take a few days some take a few weeks but, above poster is right, it has to do with when your medical expires, our medical expires December 15th, our visa is good until December 14th. We just received his passport so based on your medical, you will have enough time to plan your trip home to Canada it won't be so rushed. I worried it would be a rushed kind of landing but it isn't you will be fine!

He needs to receive his COPR document in the mail...then he can come to Canada to land. There will be an expiry date on the document (usually one year after he had his medical exam). He must land prior to that day.

You guys seem to know your stuff, so I was wondering if you could confirm or correct me of the PR procedure after the decision has been made, and let's assume it's a positive decision, in your VO.

Background: I'm from Finland which is a visa exempt country, applying for permanent residence as my Canadian common-law partner as my sponsor (outland application). My VO is London. I did upfront medical 14 December 2015 and sent out our application at the beginning of June 2016. I realize my medical will probably expire before getting my PR, but as far as I understand the VO can extend it by a year in certain cases, or the other option is that they'll request me a new one. In either case I should have plenty of time to enter Canada before the extended or the new one expires. My passport is valid for 4 more years. I probably won't be in Canada when the final stage of this PR process kicks in (I will be travelling), so among other things I'd be interested to hear which correspondence happens via mail and via email (I selected email as my primary way of correspondence).

If I've understood right, this is the order of the steps:
Decision Made
Passport Request
Confirmation of Permanent Residence
Landing

And the questions: does the correspondence happen via email only or is there something they will send me via mail? If I've understood right, applicants from visa exempt countries only need to send a photocopy of their passport, is that accurate?

Thanks so much for your help in advance!

In some cases, Decision Made shows up after PPR. Since you are visa-exempt, they may not even ask for copies of your passport. In that case, you would simply get the COPR in the mail. Then you could land.

Most correspondence happens by e-mail, but the COPR will come by mail.

Great, thank you for you answer!
I'm also wondering how long time you have after you receive your CoPR in mail, to actually land?

I'm visa exempt too and I just got my copr in the mail a few days after I got DM. There was a letter inclueded with the copr that explained that who is visa exempt don't need a visa and that there is no need for a pasport request. My VO was Paris and I'm Belgian.

Congratulations!! Okay hopefully it will be the same case for me with the passport. Do you know how long time you have for landing after receiving the CoPR?

Usually the CoPR expires at the same time your medical does, or your passport expiry (whichever is earlier).

Okay that is good to know, thank you! I don't have to worry about my passport expiring but my medical is another story. As I stated earlier my medical will probably expire before I'll get the CoPR but I've understood VO can decide to extend it in certain cases. If they indeed extend it, will I have an official paper/statement/mention somewhere saying it's extended so I won't have trouble landing with the CoPR?
