Hello,
Can anyone tell me if they have asked for Police clearance from any of the following states? and tell me about the process?
- MARYLAND
- PENNSYLVANIA
- NEW JERSEY
- NEW YORK
I have lived in all 4 states and will need to get PC from them.
One question though, how does Canada know that I have lived in them? I could just get my FBI and a State Clearance from NJ, how could they find out about the other 3 states I have lived in years ago?

1. Ok so you lie on the Background declaration where you have lived an worked since the age of 18? Misrepresentation, refusal and 2 year ban.
2. Read http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/security/police-cert/north-america/united-states.asp

Thanks!
I read that, I was just curious cos in the background declaration back when I applied only asked for countries where I lived (not states).
I would like to know about people that have gotten PC from those states just to see how they dealt with it.
As an American citizen, I have a Nexus card, which speeds up my process to enter Canada by car, will this affect my application?

You should read Q #11 http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/imm0008_1e.p

Just curious, why do you want to immigrate to Canada then?
I am applying because even though I am from the USA, I do not believe in my country and the conservative ways within the country. Canada offers me a more liberal version of my own country and I am only 120 miles from my family.

Hi edupolo,

I have to get PCCs from two of those, PA and MD. You're lucky you only have to get 4 - I have to get 7 states, FBI, and 3 other countries :) Thankfully, I left NY before I was 18 and stayed only 5 months in Mexico :) I'm in process, don't have them in hand yet -

Apart from the info on the CIC website,
http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/Detroit/offices-bureaux/certificates-certificat.aspx?lang=eng&menu_id=332&menu=L

The link for MD isn't the best - it's only for those who are in Maryland (or can travel there and do it in person). This one has better info:
http://www.dpscs.state.md.us/publicservs/bgchecks.shtml#fees

If you call them, they will mail you the fingerprint card (you have to use their card). I'm waiting for it -

As for PA, if you are located in the US (I'm not, already in Canada), you can order it online. I have to order by mail, there's a form to fill out, but no fingerprints. When I called them, the person told me (1) to write a letter requesting a notarized copy of the record check, and (2) include an SASE - although not required, the response will be faster.

I have to get 5 sets of fingerprints - some states have their own cards, some use the FBI card - in any case, if you're doing it by mail (as I am) you have to order the cards (step one). Funny, the FBI doesn't even require the FBI card.

When you get fingerprinted, in most places the fee is the same for one set of prints or many - (or only a little bit extra), so if you get all your stuff together first and get the prints done all at once, it'll save a little money.

That link for MD is so much better, I guess that it is a matter of thorough research on the internet.
You are lucky you dont have to do NY, it is a nightmare.
In addition I have to do Spain, and UK, plus FBI and those 4 states... luckily, Spain does it in person in 10 minutes, and UK is a 10 day process.
I am just worried that the FBI and the PC from the states does not get done during the 120 days that I have to submit everything.

Get your stuff in, and the 120 days is enough. It took 3 weeks for the FBI (the first time - I got them once, then the application rules changed and I had to apply to the CIO-Sidney, in the meantime the police certs are now over 3 months old... so once again... at least I didn't do the states before).

I got my police certificate from Maryland. It wasn't very difficult, but I did it in person and it sounds like you'll have to do it by mail. I went to the state police barracks, was fingerprinted on their card, mailed it in according to instructions they gave me, and less than a week later I had the result. Very painless and quick, relatively speaking!

This is the problem with dredging up an old thread - in 2009, state police clearances were required. Rules have changed since then.

You do not need to get state police clearances unless requested by CIC. You only need the FBI clearance.

In the event that CIC does require state clearances, all states have a process for non-residents. That is unlikely.

Thank you very much jes for the info....I actually already submitted FBI/Police clearance during my initial submission of application way back October 10, 2010, my file was transfered now to Los Angles and anytime PPR will be coming...so you think I do not need new FBI cleance since the one I submitted was already expired by this tme? Thank you very much for the help.
