I am a practical nursing student starting study in Sep. I just received my co-op permit, in which it states I am not authorized to work in childcare, primary/secondary school teaching, or health service field occupation.
However, I need to do my placement in a general hospital.
Please help if anyone has a similar experience.

You need to file an amendment to your co-op work permit with a medical exam.

why do I need a medical exam?
what type of medical exam?
You need a medical to work in hospitals to prove you don’t have communicable diseases or any diseases that make you inadmissable. Did you not get a medical for your study permit? If from a country that didn’t require one then you need one now. You take a medical exam with an approved IRCC panel physician. Then if you pass the medical, you can apply to change the conditions on your permit.

So you cannot go into a hospital until you change conditions on your permit with a passed medical.

You may need a medical exam because of the type of job you want to do in Canada.

Examples of such jobs are:

  1. Jobs that bring you into close contact with people, such as
    • workers in health-care settings
    • clinical laboratory workers
    • patient attendants in nursing and geriatric homes
    • medical students admitted to Canada to attend university
    • medical electives and physicians on short-term locums
    • workers in primary or secondary school settings, or workers in child-care settings
    • domestics
    • workers who give in-home care to children, the elderly and the disabled
    • day nursery employees and
    • other similar jobs

I have already given a medical exam when I applied for study permit exetension.
I know that I need to file an amadement.
It will take 4-8 weeks to process,
Can I go to the border to do this?
My placement is starting next week, so I want to do asap.
Thanks.

So your medical is less than a year old? I don’t think CBSA can process amendments so call and ask. If not, you apply and defer your placement.

UBC says amendments can only be done via paper.
