Hi,

I have a query regarding renewing a passport and what I would need to do in terms of my PR card:

Inlanded on Dec 12, 2014. My PR card will probably arrive around mid February. My passport expires August 8, 2015.

I will renew my passport this spring (SWE embassy in Ottawa). Need I apply for a new PR card?

Also, does this affect OHIP, and if so, how?

No need to get a new PR card.

Even if you do get your PR card in February, you would not be eligible to apply for OHIP until you have lived in Ontario for 5 months during your first 6 months of residence (153 days to be precise, so in your case around June 15, 2015). During this period, you cannot be out of the province for more than 30 days.

Here's some info on OHIP eligibility:

Service Ontario told me to apply within the first three months of living here so that I would be covered starting three months after landing. Also have been told this by several other senior members here (read what others have been told I should say).

You've misunderstood the rules. It's three months after landing that one qualifies for OHIP - not 5 months. You can apply for OHIP immidiately after you land but you won't be issued a card until three months has passed.

Thanks scylla. Since previous poster was wrong about that, can you also confirm whether I need a new PR card if I get a new passport?

No - you don't need a new PR card.

My apologies. The link I posted provides 2 pieces of conflicting information for newcomers, one of which I did not read.
"Am I eligible for Ontario Health Insurance" mentions 153 days in the first 6 months after taking up residence.
"Am I eligible for OHIP right away or do I have to wait ?" mentions the 3-month waiting period. That I missed.
