Hi Guys,

After updated our marital status, my common-law partner received the following letter. CIC asks my girlfried to add me on her application. However, I am also a principle applicant with CEC. I do not want to add to her application because that needs me to provide the entire documents again. Is it mandatory to add me to my spouse CEC application? Can I just tell CIC that they already have all my documents with another visa officer? Thanks for your help!

Thank you for informing us of your change in marital status.

If your spouse or common-law partner (CLP) is a Canadian citizen or if they have obtained permanent residence status in Canada, you are required to send us a proof of their status (birth certificate, Permanent Resident Card, etc.).

If your spouse or CLP is NOT a Canadian citizen or has NOT obtained permanent residence status in Canada, you will need to complete each of the following steps in order to have them added to your existing application and examined for compliance with admissibility requirements (medical, criminality and security). Unless otherwise stated, the following is mandatory whether or not your spouse or CLP decides to accompany you to Canada.

The following information/documents must be received within 60 days from the date of this correspondence. If this deadline is not met, your application will be assessed based on the information available and could be rejected.

If it is mandatory, then my visa officer will also request her documents. What's the point of sumbit the documents again that they've already have it in their system?

I would suggest to write back to the email address and explain them the situation, they may advise you on what to do. Or call the call center.

I think it could be mandatory to declare your marital status but not sure if that necessarily means that you are asking PR for your spouse.
