Hi, everyone.

On the Canada.ca website, it states that if I am to be responsible for 2 people my income needs to be 40,379 in 2018, 41,007 in 2019, and $32,899 in 2020. I made $38,000 in 2018 which is the only year I don't qualify for. However, I only want to sponsor 1 person (my mother). Does it change the income requirement for me?

Hope it makes sense,

Thank you.

Is your father still alive? If so, you need to include him in the income calculation even if only your mother is coming to Canada.

He was never in the picture and I have no contact with him. I honestly don't even know him.
Do I have to include her out of Canada income? She never worked in Canada before.

You sound confused.
The family size includes yourselve and your own dependents (spouses if any) plus the person that you will sponsor.

So if you are single and if your mother is a widow or is divorced, then, yes, your family size is 2.
Do you meet this minimum income requirement?

2 people$32,899$41,007$40,379

If you only made $38,000 in 2018, you do not meet the requirement of $40,379. From your wordings, it however doesn't sound like your mother is a widow/divorced. If your mom is not alone, then you need to meet income for 3. (her spouse)
3 people$40,445$50,414$49,641

either case, you do not meet income requirement for only 2 people in 2018. So you do not qaulify.

Who are you asking about here? It's a bit confusing. Your mother or someone else?

Yes, it needs to be income you have claimed in your Canadian tax return and which appears on line 150 of your NOA.

If your parents are no longer together and you can prove this, you should be able to exclude him from the application and won't need income to cover him.

Hi, sorry.. yes I know it sounds confusing.
so, it's only my mom that will be coming. They were never married and he left her when she got pregnant over 28 years ago. So there hasn't been any contact between them or me and my "father".
So, I unfortunately got divorced in 2020 and I am in Canada by myself (citizen now). I have no dependents.
So I really don't meet the requirement because of 2 thousand dollars lol. Crazy, eh? I will have to wait another year then.
What confused me was that they say "you will be responsible for 2 people" I imagined it being two extra people, but I get it now. it means I'll be responsible for me and her.
I hope this answers Scylla and YVR123
Thanks a lot.

The income requirement is already extremely low so yes 2k makes a difference. If your mother got sick and ended up in longterm care home you'd be required to pay 1k+/month on top of your current living costs in addition to her supplies and your living costs. Not sure how anyone could afford this on the LICO. Paying for dental care for parents while making 40k would be difficult.
